Bryson DeChambeau explored options to leave LIV Golf during Masters week

Bryson DeChambeau’s future with LIV Golf has become a major talking point after new details emerged during a turbulent week for the Saudi-backed circuit. The two-time major champion was in Mexico City for LIV Golf’s latest event as questions around the league’s long-term direction intensified.

Those questions grew after Brody Miller of The Athletic wrote that DeChambeau and his representatives used part of Masters week to explore options outside LIV. The timing is significant because DeChambeau is one of LIV Golf’s biggest stars and one of its most valuable commercial figures, thanks to both tournament success and a massive digital audience.

The development came days after DeChambeau missed the cut at the Masters and before he later withdrew from the final round of the LIV Golf Mexico City event due to a wrist issue. LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil has also acknowledged changes may be coming, saying on a broadcast, “Do you have to raise money? Probably. This is business.”

Bryson DeChambeau Discussed Leaving LIV Golf During Masters Week

According to Miller in The Athletic, “DeChambeau and his team spent a part of Masters week meeting with organizations to discuss possible options if he chose to leave LIV.”

That detail places one of LIV’s most recognizable names at the center of fresh speculation about the league’s future. DeChambeau’s current contract is in its final year, according to the same report.

Miller also wrote that industry speculation suggests DeChambeau’s asking price to sign a new deal could reach $500 million. The report added that DeChambeau has used the strength of his YouTube platform as leverage in negotiations.

DeChambeau has become one of golf’s most visible personalities away from the course. Miller noted that his channel regularly attracts millions of viewers, giving him value beyond tournament results.

Inside LIV Golf, optimism remains that he will stay. But Miller also wrote there is recognition that the league “cannot ever go back to the world of contracts worth hundreds of millions in guaranteed dollars.”

That makes DeChambeau’s contract situation one of the most important business storylines in professional golf heading into the summer schedule.

The contract questions surfaced during a difficult week of competition for DeChambeau.

After missing the cut at the Masters, he struggled in Mexico City and entered the final round 16 shots behind leader Jon Rahm before withdrawing on Sunday.

DeChambeau announced on social media, “I experienced some discomfort in my wrist during yesterday’s round and have decided to withdraw from the final round of LIV Golf Mexico City to prevent further injury.”

He added, “Not how I wanted this week to go.”

DeChambeau said he would be evaluated and still hoped to compete at LIV Golf Virginia on May 7-10, one week before the PGA Championship.

His withdrawal came while LIV Golf faced renewed scrutiny over its finances and long-term structure. Miller wrote that LIV executives spent the week meeting with sponsors and investors while the league continued to publicly project confidence.

Scott O’Neil also told TNT Sports, “The reality is you’re funded through the season, and then you work like crazy as a business to create a business and a business plan to keep us going.”

For LIV Golf, DeChambeau remains a central figure because of his competitive record, popularity, and marketability. Any uncertainty surrounding his future naturally carries weight across the sport.

For DeChambeau, the immediate focus now shifts to health and preparation for the PGA Championship. But after the revelations from Masters week, his next contract decision may become just as closely watched as his next tournament start.
