As the PGA Tour continues its 2026 season, one of the early highlights is the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Courses in San Diego. Held Jan. 29-Feb. 1, this event has consistently stood out on the West Coast Swing, and this year’s field of premier talent, rising stars, and returning veterans offers both intrigue and star power.
Traditionally played over the iconic North and South courses at Torrey Pines, the Farmers Insurance Open features a roughly 147-player field that includes a high-profile former major champion making his first regular PGA Tour start in years, creating no shortage of intrigue and early-season storylines.

Brooks Koepka’s Return
One of the biggest talking points surrounding this year’s Farmers Insurance Open is the return of Koepka to full PGA Tour competition. After four seasons competing in LIV Golf, Koepka re-enters through the PGA Tour’s Returning Member Program, prompting the Tour to expand the field slightly so that existing members wouldn’t lose spots due to his addition.
Koepka’s first test back in a regular Tour event will be closely watched. He hasn’t played a non-major PGA Tour event since the 2022 WGC Match Play, and though he’s continued to compete on golf’s biggest stages, his return to daily Tour life presents a new challenge. With multiple major championships to his name and a strong competitive instinct, how he fares could reverberate well beyond just this week’s leaderboard.
“I’m a little nervous about that [fan reception to his return] as well. Just to see how the fans respond to it,” Koepka said. “I hope that they’re excited, I hope they’re happy that I’m out here. It hopefully echoes the conversations I’ve had with other players. They’re excited that I’m back and happy to see me playing.”
According to the PGA Tour, “Koepka will be showcased in a featured group for the first two rounds, playing alongside former Farmers Insurance Open winner Max Homa and Ludvig Åberg, who won on Tour last year at Torrey Pines.”
His best previous finish at Torrey Pines was a tie for 41st in 2015.
Notable Withdrawals
While the 2026 Farmers Insurance Open field remains strong, a handful of players have withdrawn in the days leading up to the event, shaking up the lineup slightly and opening opportunities for alternates.
Among the early scratches from the field are Nico Echavarria and Patton Kizzire, both PGA Tour winners in 2024 who were expected to compete at Torrey Pines, but pulled out for unspecified reasons. Echavarria, known for his 2024 Zozo Championship victory, and Kizzire, a three-time Tour winner, had been part of the rotating leaderboard conversation in recent seasons before deciding to skip San Diego.
Additionally, 2025 DP World Tour champion Michael Kim confirmed he would miss the Farmers due to a lingering back strain he’s been battling over the past few weeks. His intention is to rest and return healthy in the next stretch of the schedule.
These absences allowed alternates like Taylor Moore, Sam Ryder, and Joel Dahmen to move into the field, along with APGA Invitational winner Marcus Byrd, who earned his spot through competitive performance. Byrd’s inclusion adds another compelling storyline, a player earning his way into one of the PGA Tour’s most historic events through merit rather than exemption.
It’s also worth noting the absence of some global stars who simply chose not to play in this week’s event, even though they remain active on the PGA Tour calendar elsewhere. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler elected not to travel to Torrey Pines following his win at The American Express, instead preserving his schedule for upcoming tournaments. Other high-profile names, like Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood, also are not entered this week as part of their early-season planning.
