Last year at the Cognizant Classic, the virtually unknown Joe Highsmith barely made the cut for weekend golf. After a tense Friday round, it looked as if the 24-year-old left-hander might not compete on Sunday, let alone contend for the title. Highsmith proved otherwise.
Following his close call, Highsmith delivered what can only be described as a breakthrough performance. He not only took home first place, but set a record 19-under 265 in the process. The victory launched his professional career into the spotlight while also drawing attention to his unique putting style. One that has fascinated golf fans ever since.
Cognizant Classic Champion’s Unique Putt
Highsmith’s unconventional approach became a topic of discussion following his win. It only heightened following an episode of the No Laying Up Podcast where they discussed the move. Viewers were shocked to see Highsmith putt with his eyes closed, a technique he has practiced throughout his professional career.
“I know the No Laying Up guys just released a clip talking about me putting with my eyes closed and yeah, I’ve done that for quite a long time now,” said Highsmith while talking with the PGA Tour. “I don’t know exactly when it started but my very first pro event was a PGA Tour Canada event and I had a 15 footer for eagle on 18 to get into a playoff and eyes were definitely shut for that one.”
Highsmith explained that closing his eyes allows him to block out distractions and focus only on the stroke. “Looking back over my golfing life, any of the important putts that I’ve ever had, eyes were always closed for sure,” he said.
“Maybe it’s like a nerve coping mechanism in a way, If I’m looking at the ball and I see the hole right there I think it just makes it difficult if you have that whole visual aspect. When I shut my eyes then I can just focus on making a stroke and take the results out of it and just try to put a good stroke on the ball.” said Highsmith.
Cognizant Classic Recap
The 2025 Cognizant Classic, held in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, saw Highsmith enter the tournament with no professional wins to his name. After barely making the cut, something clicked for Highsmith. He went on to card back-to-back 7-under 64s, marking the lowest weekend score in PGA National history.
The 24-year-old’s performance was incredible for more than just his weekend score. Highsmith became the first player in nine years to go from making the cut on the number to claiming the top spot. This accomplishment left fans and players in awe of his performance. His iron play, combined with his unique putting technique, made him nearly unstoppable during the final rounds.
Following the win, Highsmith felt both elated and humble. “Winning was the last thing on my mind,” he said. “It’s incredible to come out on top. I played probably the best round of my life.”
The victory at the Cognizant Classic secured Highsmith’s place on the PGA Tour. It also earned him a reputation as an interesting player to watch. As players prepare for the 2026 Cognizant Classic, fans will surely be keeping their eyes on Highsmith as he looks to defend his title.
