As Patrick Reed attempts to win his second Masters, questions continue to swirl about the star’s relationship with his parents, Bill and Jeannette Reed. Much was made about Patrick’s estrangement from his family during his 2018 Masters run.
Since then, there have been little updates provided about Patrick’s relationship with his parents, a topic that once again takes center stage amid the golfer’s stellar play at the 2026 Masters. During the 2018 Masters, Patrick’s mom and dad watched their son win the major from home, despite living in Augusta.
Amid his latest surge, Patrick has revealed very little about where things stand with his family.
“The Reeds haven’t spoken to their son and brother in six years,” ESPN’s Ian O’Connor wrote in an April 12, 2018, story titled, “From 3 miles away, Patrick Reed’s family wept as they watched him win the Masters.” “Like most family estrangements, theirs is complicated. It’s Patrick and his wife, Justine, and her family on one side, and Bill, Jeannette, Hannah and their family on the other.
“The Reeds are not welcome at Patrick’s tournaments; Golf.com reported that they were escorted off the grounds of the 2014 U.S. Open on Justine’s wishes. Some years ago, I ran into Bill at a tournament, and it was clear he was trying to watch his son play golf without anyone noticing he was watching his son play golf.”
Here’s what you need to know about Reed’s family.
Patrick Reed’s Wife, Justine Reed, Had the Golfer’s Parents, Bill & Jeannette, Removed From the 2014 U.S. Open: Report
It remains unclear why Patrick and his parents are estranged. At last report, it does not appear that Patrick’s mom and dad are on good terms with his wife, Justine Reed.
Journalist Alan Shipnuck reported for Golf.com in April 2018, that Justine had Patrick’s parents removed during the 2014 U.S. Open. The New York Times reported that it was security who made the decision, not the golfer or his wife.
“The Reeds have had no contact with Patrick since he got married, despite repeatedly emailing him and reaching out through intermediaries,” Shipnuck wrote in an April 8, 2018 story titled, “‘My son is a Masters champion’: Patrick Reed’s estranged family endures a complex mix of emotions.” “A friend of Bill and Jeannette’s had extra tickets to the 2014 U.S. Open, so with some trepidation, they went to Pinehurst No. 2 and followed Patrick throughout the second round, hoping to perhaps reestablish contact and meet their granddaughter for the first time.
“Justine was also in the gallery, but no words were exchanged. Walking up the 18th hole, Bill, Jeannette and Hannah were surrounded by police officers. They ultimately were escorted off the grounds and had their tournament badges confiscated by a USGA official who, according to Jeannette, said he was acting on Justine’s wishes.”
Patrick Reed’s Mom & Dad Lived 6 Miles From Augusta National as of 2019: Report
Patrick again spoke about the schism during a 2019 interview with The New York Times’ Karen Crouse. It was one year after Patrick’s Masters victory and the golfer was still not on speaking terms with his family.
“Reed’s parents live six miles from Augusta National Golf Club, in a two-story, Southern-style Colonial replete with a bedroom shrine to their first child and only son, who hasn’t stepped foot in the house since 2012,” Crouse detailed in an April 9, 2019, story titled, “The Most Unwelcome Fan in Patrick Reed’s Gallery: His Father.”
“This week should (have been) a joyous homecoming for Reed, who led Augusta State (now Augusta University) to back-to-back national championships and will preside over Tuesday’s legends-laden Champions dinner.”
Ahead of the 2019 Masters, Patrick expressed concern that his parents would show up to Augusta National uninvited.
“I wouldn’t at all be surprised if they show up,” Reed told The New York Times at the time.
