Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland celebrates winning the 2025 Masters Tournament after the playoff hole on the 18th green during the final round of the 2025 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club on April 13, 2025 in Augusta, Georgia.

Recently, Rory McIlroy took a trip down Masters memory lane with a return visit to Augusta National Golf Club. The visit gave McIlroy a chance to reflect on one of the most important moments of his career.

He brought along his father, Gerry McIlroy, who had been unable to attend the tournament when McIlroy completed his career Grand Slam. The opportunity to walk the course together carried special meaning for both of them.

During the visit, McIlroy and his father paired up with Fred Ridley, the chairman of Augusta National. Together, the group played a round on the “The Hallowed Grounds.” For McIlroy, it was a not only a celebratory return, but a chance to relive memories from the tournament that cemented his status as a legendary golfer.

McIlroy Visits Augusta and the Champions Locker Room

While touring the clubhouse, McIlroy also visited the famous Champions Locker Room. There, he learned that he would be sharing a locker with two legendary Masters champions: Ben Hogan, who won the tournament in 1951 and 1953, and Raymond Floyd, the 1976 champion.

The Champions Locker Room honors only Masters winners and carries a deep history, making the moment even more meaningful for McIlroy as he joined the ranks of golf’s most celebrated players.

McIlroy also confirmed that the TaylorMade RORS prototype 7-iron he used for one of the most memorable shots of the tournament is now on display inside the Champions Locker Room. The club was used for the remarkable shot that hooked around the towering Georgia pines before settling about six feet from the hole. The shot became one of the defining highlights of his Masters victory.

McIlroy Recreates Firethorn

During his recent visit, McIlroy even attempted to recreate that famous moment on the “Firethorn” 15th hole.

“I hit the shot on 15 again, just to replicate it,” McIlroy said.

“I nearly pitched it in the hole. It was actually a better shot than I hit in the tournament. It was actually unbelievable. I wish I could have got it on camera,” McIlroy said. “Like literally, the pitch mark was that close from the hole, and it just sort of went to the back edge of the green.”

In keeping with the original moment, McIlroy chose to use a 7-iron again when attempting the shot.

“I’m a little stronger this year,” he joked. “I’ve put in a bit of work in the gym.”

McIlroy’s Upcoming Weeks

Looking ahead, McIlroy faces an intense stretch in the coming weeks. He is preparing to compete in The Players Championship, where he will attempt to defend his title. Shortly after that, his focus will shift to The Masters Tournament. There, he hopes to repeat his victory and join an elite group of back-to-back champions. A group that only includes legends Tiger Woods, Nick Faldo, and Jack Nicklaus.

However, McIlroy’s future is uncertain due to an ongoing back injury. On March 7, he withdrew ahead of the third round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, citing back spasms. The injury has delayed his travel plans ahead of The Players Championship.

It leaves some uncertainty about his condition as he approaches one of the most important stretches of the season. Despite the setback, McIlroy appears focused on recovering and preparing for the challenges that lie ahead.
