The Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball roster is already undergoing offseason changes, and now another notable name is on the move. Guard Jalil Bethea is expected to enter the NCAA transfer portal following a frustrating season in Tuscaloosa.
Once viewed as a high-upside addition for head coach Nate Oats, Bethea’s time with Alabama never quite matched expectations.
On3’s Joe Tipton broke the news of Bethea’s decision late Tuesday night on social media.
Bethea’s Disappointing Season At Alabama
Bethea arrived in Tuscaloosa as a former five-star prospect and a transfer from Miami, bringing with him significant hype and the expectation of becoming a key contributor in Alabama’s high-powered system.
Bethea appeared in 26 games but averaged just 8 minutes in those contests, scoring 3.9 points, while shooting 37.5% from three.
High Expectations For Former Five-Star
Coming into the season, many believed Bethea could fine-tune his game the way other guards who have thrived in the Nate Oats system. Alabama’s fast-paced, perimeter-oriented offense seemed like a perfect fit for his skill set.
But the transition never fully clicked.
Whether it was adjusting to the system, defensive limitations, or simply a lack of confidence, Bethea never became the impact player Alabama envisioned when he transferred in.
Even late in the season, when opportunities arose due to injuries and roster changes, he was unable to capitalize consistently.
What’s Next For Jalil Bethea
Despite his first couple of seasons at the collegiate level being a little disappointing, Betha still has a lot of upside and will likely receive a lot of interest in the portal.
With two years of eligibility remaining, Bethea still has time to rectify his basketball career.
How Losing Bethea Impacts Alabama Basketball
Bethea is Alabama’s third transfer portal departure, joining forwards Taylor Bol Bowen and Aiden Sherrell.
While Bethea is not as significant a loss as Sherrell is, his departure still impacts the overall depth of the team, and Coach Oats and his staff will have to dig deeper to fill the open roster spot.
