LeBron James‘ son Bryce James is garnering plenty of controversy at the Final Four by literally not doing anything. James is part of the Arizona squad that made the Final Four.
LeBron’s son is redshirting and has not played in a non-exhibition game for Arizona during his freshman season. On the eve of Arizona’s Final Four clash against Michigan, James declined to do interviews, which is being framed by some media members as a controversy.
It appears James was advised by Klutch Sports not to speak to the media. The only reason this is becoming a news topic is because teams are allowed to make all their players available (though not required) during the Final Four media sessions.
“Arizona had an enforcer in the locker room today near Bryce James to tell reporters that he wasn’t going to do interviews,” Yahoo Sports’ Dan Wolken detailed in a series of April 3, 2026, messages on X. “To be clear, Bryce’s media availability is being dictated by LeBron/Klutch, not Arizona.”
Here’s what you need to know about James.
Should LeBron James’ Son Bryce James Have Done Interviews at the Final Four?
It is not common for players who are not part of the team’s rotation to do interviews during the season. For context, James has not played a game for Arizona this season.
Typically, a player in this circumstance would not be in-demand, even if the athlete was available for interviews. Things are different for James given he is the son of the Los Angeles Lakers star.
Arizona’s Bryce James Is Following a Similar Media Strategy to Texas QB Arch Manning
We saw the Manning family take a similar approach with Texas quarterback Arch Manning. The highly touted quarterback did not do interviews during his two years as the backup signal-caller for the Longhorns.
Like Manning, James comes from a famous family which means increased scrutiny. NBA.com’s Krysten Peek defended James decision to decline interviews.
“He shouldn’t be available to media since he’s redshirting this year so what’s the problem?” Peek pondered in an April 3, message on X.
“And the person isn’t an ‘enforcer’, it’s his bodyguard who’s been with him for years and he’s actually a very nice person just doing his job!”
Arizona’s Bryce James Could Have an Expanded Role in 2026-27
It is a fickle world for high-profile athletes like Manning and James. Now, Manning is getting backlash for too much exposure amid several major NIL deals.
James could have a larger role on Arizona during the 2026-27. This likely will lead to no shortage of media appearances by LeBron’s youngest son.
Arizona HC Tommy Lloyd on Bryce James Not Playing: ‘Will Not Be Influenced by Media or Social Media’
Heading into the Final Four, James has not played in a non-exhibition game for Arizona this season. Instead, James opted to redshirt his freshman season to ease into college basketball.
“My commitment’s to Bryce and helping Bryce run his own race,” Arizona head coach Tommy Lloyd said of James during an October 2, 2025, media session, per the Arizona Daily Star. “That commitment I’ve made to him will not be influenced by media or social media.
“I care about Bryce. That’s all I care about. I don’t care what anybody else thinks, and he and I are gonna stay locked in on that relationship and continue to grow.”
