The No. 2 seed University of Houston basketball program is preparing for a showdown game against the No. 3 seed Illinois team. So far in the 2026 NCAA March Madness Tournament, health of the Houston Cougars has not been a dominant headline for the team – and that’s definitely a good thing!
Unlike several other teams still competing in March Madness, the Houston basketball team enters the Sweet 16 round with a relatively stable roster from an injury standpoint, which could be the deciding factor in what is expected to be a physically demanding round of play. Here’s everything to know about the current injury status of the Houston Cougars ahead of their game against Illinois tonight. A full schedule of March Madness Sweet 16 games can be found here.

One of the biggest takeaways heading into their matchup against Illinois is that Houston does not appear to be dealing with any major new injuries among its core rotation players. Instead, focus leading into tonight’s matchup has focused more on performance and Houston’s defensive dominance rather than injury concerns. This is particularly encouraging for head coach Kelvin Sampson and his staff.
Houston’s ability to dominate its first two NCAA Tournament games, winning both by more than 30 points each, has been fueled in part by roster continuity and availability. Key contributors on the court including Emanuel Sharp, Milos Uzan, and Chris Cenac Jr. have all been active and impactful, ultimately helping the Houston basketball program maintain one fo the most balanced lineups remaining in the field – and one of the healthiest, too!

The relative health of the Houston basketball team allows the Cougars to rely fully on their identity as a program containing elite defense, relentless rebounding, and depth in their rotation. In a tournament where many teams are managing injuries or shortened rotations at present, Houston’s stability could be one of its greatest strengths for advancing into the Elite Eight round of the competition.
Because Houston is not currently battling significant injuries, they are able to deploy their full frontcourt and backcourt rotations, which is a factor that has become increasingly important as the tournament has unfolded. The Cougars’ depth has been evident in their tournament performances where multiple players have contributed to the team’s success, rather than the roster being reliant merely on a single star.
