On Friday, March 27, 2026, the St. John’s basketball program will take on the Duke University Blue Devils in the Sweet 16 round of the 2026 NCAA March Madness Tournament. Both teams are extremely talented, but one thing sets this apart at this stage: the health of their rosters and core rotation players.
While Duke has suffered multiple major injuries to key contributors, the St. John’s squad is looking pretty good – albeit, they aren’t out of the clear entirely. Here’s everything to know about the injury status updates for the St. John’s basketball team ahead of their primetime Sweet 16 matchup on the court tonight. Unlike many teams at this stage of the NCAA Tournament, St. John’s enters the Sweet 16 relatively healthy with a significant advantage as the physical toll of March Madness intensifies. However, that doesn’t mean that the Red Storm is without concern. Minor injuries, player fatigue, and the demands of a deep tournament run remain key storylines as they prepare to face one of the most talented programs in the country.
One of the biggest positives for St. John’s is the availability of its core contributors, including players such as Zuby Ejiofor, Dylan Darling, and RJ Luis Jr, all of whom have remained active and productive throughout the duration of the NCAA Tournament. Their presence has been critical for continuity on the court and in powering the Red Storm’s run to the Sweet 16, including the team’s narrow win against Kansas. Ejiofor, in particular, has anchored the frontcourt and is coming off of a strong stretch of game time performances. His physicality and ability to stay on the floor without foul trouble or injury issues will be crucial against the Blue Devils and the Duke team’s physicality, size, and athleticism. Meanwhile, Darling’s composure in late-game situations has helped immeasurably on the backcourt. Having both of the players remain healthy and active while Duke’s core players have succumbed to injuries and illness gives the St. John’s basketball team an advantage in tonight’s matchup.
Managing Fatigue and Minor Issues is Still a Concern

While there are no widely reported major injuries within the St. John’s rotation, the team is dealing with the typical “March wear and tear” that comes late in the year as the season draws to a close, particularly when teams are able to advance this deep into the NCAA Tournament. After a long regular season and two intense tournament games so far, players are managing minor bumps, bruises, and general fatigue.
Head coach Rick Pitino has emphasized depth and conditioning as key factors heading into the matchup tonight. His rotation, which includes versatile contributors such as Dillon Mitchell and Oziyah Sellers, will allow St. John’s to maintain their defensive intensity without overextending any one individual player to the point of potential injury. Maintaining this type of dynamic both on and off of the court in practice sessions is going to continue to assist the St. John’s squad on their journey through the tournament.
