The Boston Red Sox have made several moves this offseason. However, the major question surrounding the team is whether the front office will do what it takes to sign free-agent hitter Alex Bregman, who spent the 2025 MLB season in Boston.
Bregman has several suitors, so he will need to decide which team is the best fit for him, given that this is likely the last long-term contract of his career. After settling on a short-term deal last offseason, the veteran is probably in the market that takes care of him for the foreseeable future.
Nonetheless, the question will be whether it will be with the Red Sox. Despite the uncertainty, Boston did get a major admission on Bregman as Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reported that Trevor Story said he and Bregman are “in contact a lot.”
Still, Starr’s report mentions that Story didn’t want to delve into their private conversations, “out of respect” for Bregman. As a result, it appears that his Red Sox teammates might be urging him to remain in Boston rather than head elsewhere, especially if the money is the same.
Alex Cora Makes Feelings Clear About Alex Bregman
Moreover, Red Sox manager Alex Cora was asked about Bregman and whether he wants the veteran to return. Cora didn’t hide his feelings but did have the tone that he understands that this is the business side of baseball taking place and only the player really knows what he wants to do with his future.
“The ball is in his court,” Cora told reporters on Jan. 10 (h/t Rob Bradford of WEEI). “Obviously, we’ve been working together to see what happens. But, obviously, it’s a different offseason for Alex. You guys know how I feel about him.
“Last year, he checked all the boxes, some boxes that people didn’t know that he was going to check. I just let him work, talk about free agents, very straightforward, black and white, but I love the player. We love the player. Let’s see what happens.”
The Red Sox Don’t Need to Go All Out for Alex Bregman
Despite Bregman checking all the boxes for the Red Sox, former MLB player Chris Gimenez believes that Boston doesn’t need to go all out to bring back Bregman.
“I think where they’re at, they still have a ton of talent on this roster,” Gimenez said in a Dec. 27 video posted by MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM. “Does Alex Bregman help that out? Yes, of course he does. He’s the adult in the room. He’s the leader of that clubhouse. Somebody would have to fill that role. But you just made the trade for Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras. That’s going to help from the power standpoint, that you may lose from Alex Bregman departing.
“I also think these young guys are ready, they’re ready. The Red Sox are actually in a really good position, if you ask me. I don’t think they have to sign Alex Bregman. Do I want them to? Yes, because I think he’s the perfect fit there. I would also like to see him in Toronto, because I think that’s a really good fit for him as well.”
