Caleb Durbin opened up on all the comparisons to Dustin Pedroia he's received since getting traded to the Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox have had an interesting offseason. While they have been almost comically passive in free agency, they have been significantly busier on the trade market. The latest such move saw the Sox pick up infielder Caleb Durbin in a six-player trade with the Milwaukee Brewers that helped the team shore up a key area of weakness.

After losing Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs in free agency, Durbin is likely going to face some heightened expectations in 2025, whether he deserves to or not. And while Durbin alone won’t be able to replace Bregman’s production, he has already drawn comparisons to one of the Red Sox’s most iconic franchise legends: Dustin Pedroia.

Caleb Durbin Dishes on Dustin Pedroia Comparisons

Pedroia spent his entire 14-year career with the Red Sox, and ever since his retirement in 2019, the team has struggled to fill the void left by him at second base. Despite being just 5’9, Pedroia was one of the most productive hitters during his prime, as he was a four-time All-Star who also earned four Gold Gloves, the 2007 Rookie of the Year Award, and an MVP Award in 2008.

Considering how Durbin is even shorter than Pedroia at 5’7, it’s not hard to see where the comparisons come from. While Durbin can play at both third and second base, he has a similar playstyle to Pedroia. In his rookie season, Durbin hit .256 with 11 home runs and 53 RBIs, while also stealing 18 bases.

Durbin’s positional fit with Boston is still a question mark, but he figures to play a big role in its lineup in 2026 and beyond. Immediately, he’s been hit with a wave of comparisons to Pedroia since joining the Red Sox, and while Durbin isn’t ready to put himself in the same category as the former star second baseman, he revealed that he has modeled parts of his game after Pedroia.

“He was definitely one of my favorite players growing up. And a guy that I definitely try to model my game around,” Durbin said of Pedroia. “Obviously a long way to go, but he was a dude I really enjoyed watching.”

While Durbin fills an area of need in the field for the Red Sox, he’s not exactly the sort of power-hitter they have spent much of the offseason looking for. Boston will be putting the ball in play quite a bit this season, but it remains to be seen if they will have enough pop to go on a deep playoff run in the fall.

As Spring Training gets underway, manager Alex Cora has a lot of players at his disposal who are contending for spots on the major league roster. How he decides to construct his roster, whether it be the lineup, the starting rotation, or the bullpen, will play a big role in the team’s success. Durbin is just another piece of the puzzle, and if he can come anywhere close to replicating Pedroia’s production, the team will likely be thrilled.
