The Boston Red Sox were hoping to re-sign star third baseman Alex Bregman in MLB free agency this offseason. Up until today, they remained one of the teams with a shot at making that goal become a reality.
Unfortunately, on Saturday night, news broke that Bregman had signed elsewhere.
According to a report from ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan, the Chicago Cubs have agreed to a major five-year, $175 million contract with Bregman. They had been heavily connected to him all offseason long and were finally able to land him.
Last offseason, the Red Sox were able to sign Bregman despite him receiving heavy interest from the Cubs. Sadly, they were on the reverse side of the situation this time around.
Following the news of Bregman signing with Chicago, the backlash has not been easy to handle for Boston.
Boston Red Sox Facing Backlash After Losing Out on Alex Bregman
One Red Sox analyst took to X to share his opinion on Bregman leaving the Red Sox. He pointed out that Boston foolishly ruined its relationship with Rafael Devers to sign Bregman. Losing him one offseason later is a very bad look for the organization.
“So… The Red Sox ruined their relationship with and eventually traded their franchise superstar and longest tenured player in the name of playing Alex Bregman at 3B… Only to then let Alex Bregman walk seven months later… Now they’re both gone… Make it make sense…,” @BOSSportsGordon wrote on X.
Fans quickly jumped into the comments section agreeing with the post.
“So let me get this straight… they have Jordan Hicks to show for Rafael Devers and Alex Bregman? Nailed it!” one fan wrote.
A second fan commented, “But John Henry doesn’t have to pay either of them.”
“All time fumble by this organization. Solidified by allowing him to walk and not spending on any FAs and getting packing peanuts for Devers,” a third fan said.
Losing Bregman Is a Crushing Blow for the Red Sox
During his first and only season with Boston in 2025, Bregman played in 114 games. He hit 18 home runs to go along with 62 RBI, while also slashing .273/.360/.462.
In his previous three seasons with the Houston Astros, he never hit less than 23 home runs and had 93 and 98 RBI in 2022 and 2023. Bregman’s bat will be a huge addition for Chicago and losing him will have a negative impact on the Red Sox lineup.
Losing both Devers and Bregman in the same year is an all-time low for Boston. There is no denying that the front office fumbled the entire situation.
How could the Red Sox turn things around this offseason? One option could be Bo Bichette.
USA Today MLB insider Bob Nightengale has reported that Boston will turn its attention to Bo Bichette. If the Red Sox can get a deal done with him, they might be able to salvage this offseason.
It will be interesting to see what Boston gets done in the coming days and weeks. Bichette has received heavy interest from the Philadelphia Phillies, but if the Red Sox get involved that situation could get very interesting.
