Isiah Kiner-Falefa is aiming to win a Gold Glove after signing with the Red Sox in free agency

The Boston Red Sox have had a bit of an odd offseason. Despite having a boatload of money at their disposal after trading Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants midway through the 2025 campaign, the Red Sox have been fairly cheap when it comes to free agency, instead opting to make the majority of their moves on the trade market.

One of the team’s few free agent signings is utility-man Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who is fresh off a World Series run with the Toronto Blue Jays last season. Now, Kiner-Falefa has found his way to their division rival, and he recently revealed that he has a big goal set for himself in his first season with Boston.

Kiner-Falefa broke into the majors back in 2018 with the Texas Rangers, and he has gradually turned himself into one of the more well-rounded utility players in the league. While he doesn’t hit for much power, Kiner-Falefa is a contact hitter who can consistently get on base. Defensively, Kiner-Falefa is renowned for his above-average play at several different spots on the field.

The 2025 campaign was a bit of an odd one for Kiner-Falefa. While final numbers are decent (.262 BA, 2 HR, 40 RBI, 15 SB, .631 OPS), he struggled after he got claimed off waivers by Toronto in the wake of the Pittsburgh Pirates‘ surprising decision to release him. The defining moment of his season, unfortunately, was when he got thrown out at home plate in Game 7 of the World Series. Had he scored, the Blue Jays would have won a championship.

Now, Kiner-Falefa finds himself factoring into a Boston infield that has several spots up for grabs. Kiner-Falefa envisions himself as a jack-of-all-trades, which is what the team may very well need him to become. However, he has his sights set on a defensive goal, as the talented utilityman revealed that he wants to win the second Gold Glove Award of his career in 2026.

“Not many people can do it,” Kiner-Falefa said of his positional versatility in the field. “You see the Kikés, Chris Taylors, Brock Holts, these guys who have had so much success. They’re valuable, valuable players … I was joking around with (Ceddanne) Rafaela today, hoping he just plays one spot so he can’t qualify for the utility Gold Glove. It’s something that I’m gonna try to go after.”

After losing Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs and missing out on guys like Kyle Schwarber and Pete Alonso, it’s safe to say that the signing of Kiner-Falefa isn’t particularly exciting. However, he fills a need that the team had after losing Bregman, and after receiving quite a bit of backlash for his aforementioned play in the World Series, it’s clear he’s motivated to put together a strong 2026 campaign.

Where Kiner-Falefa will play in the field remains unknown, and chances are he will have to fill a handful of different spots, depending on who’s available for manager Alex Cora on a day-to-day basis. Expectations may not be high for Boston’s newest free agent signing, but if all goes according to plan, he could surprise some folks in his first season with the Sox.
