The Boston Red Sox have had a rollercoaster of an MLB offseason thus far. After entering the offseason with a clear priority of re-signing star third baseman Alex Bregman, the team watched him sign with the Chicago Cubs instead.

Despite losing Bregman, the Red Sox have been busy. They are still looking to make moves as well.

To this point, the biggest splash the front office has made this offseason was signing former Philadelphia Phillies star starting pitcher Ranger Suarez to a lucrative five-year, $130 million contract. However, it sounds like Boston is interested in making another big move.

Eugenio Suarez has been talked about as a potential replacement for Bregman. He remains a free agent and the Red Sox are being connected as a team who could land him.

Boston Red Sox Emerging as a Top Fit for Eugenio Suarez

Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly took some time to rank the top landing spots for Suarez this offseason. The Red Sox came in at No. 2 on the list, trailing only the Los Angeles Angels.

“Suárez would fit the bill for the Red Sox, taking over as their third baseman and providing elite power production for a relatively short commitment,” Kelly wrote. “He feels like someone who would make a killing hitting at Fenway Park, and indeed he has four homers and 14 RBI in just 10 career games in Boston.”

Suarez is exactly the kind of piece Boston should have interest in. He may not be nearly as pure of a hitter as Bregman, but he brings a lot of pop to a lineup.

During the 2025 MLB season split between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners, the veteran third baseman played in 159 games. He hit 49 home runs to go along with 118 RBI and a slash line of .228/.298/.526.

Simply adding that kind of power would help the Red Sox’ offense. He also wouldn’t be nearly as expensive as a deal for Bregman would have been.

What Would It Take to Sign Suarez?

Spotrac has projected Suarez to earn a contract worth around $29.9 million over two years in free agency. If that is indeed the price tag, Boston should be all over his market.

Losing Bregman’s production from last season, which included 18 home runs, 62 RBI, and a slash line of .273/.360/.462 over 114 games will be difficult to replace. His presence in the clubhouse is also a major loss for the Red Sox.

Suarez may not be a superstar, but he’s more than capable of making a big impact with his bat.

At the very least, Boston could view him as a one-year option to start at third base. He’s not known for his defense, but his bat would certainly help the Red Sox compete in the American League East.

Expect to hear more rumors about Boston in the near future. It’s possible that the Red Sox may not feel pressure to make a move to replace Bregman. However, if they choose to pursue an option, Suarez would be the best one available in MLB free agency.
