Red Sox Insider Issues Warning on Star Free Agent’s Fit at Fenway

The Boston Red Sox appear somewhat likely to land either Alex Bregman or Bo Bichette. Bregman recently opted out of his previous deal with Boston, but the Red Sox are aggressively pursuing the star once again. Recent reports even suggested that the club is “satisfied” with their offer to the third baseman.

Nevertheless, several other teams, including the Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs, are also interested in Bregman. If a serious bidding war ensues, the Red Sox may swoop in for Bichette. While securing either player would be wise for Boston, one expert believes there is a clear preferred option.

The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier has identified some red flags in Bichette’s game related to playing at Fenway Park. While the infielder has a .329/.382/.524 career line at the historic field, his underlying figures are somewhat worrisome. “Despite his production at Fenway, Bichette’s spray chart isn’t necessarily ideal for the park,” claimed Speier.

“Whereas Bregman had one of the highest air-pull rates in the big leagues last year (24 percent of batted balls), Bichette sat at the opposite end of the spectrum (13 percent). Meanwhile, Bichette gets away with a high chase rate because he puts such pitches in play more than most. However, contact on pitches out of the strike zone often doesn’t age well, creating long-term risk for Bichette’s offensive profile.”

Boston Red Sox May Have to Add Another Infielder if Bo Bichette Signs

GettyBo Bichette is heading towards a position change in 2026.

On top of these metrics, Bichette and Bregman have played two different positions in their careers. Bichette has only ever played shortstop during his time with the Toronto Blue Jays. Despite this, Boston, or any other team pursuing his signature, wants Bichette to change positions. The pending move comes down to the star’s shaky defensive statistics at shortstop.

Moving Bichette to second base is likely the preferred move for his new team. Nevertheless, there have been some suggestions that the infielder could soon move over to third base. Although the switch could work out well, there is certainly a sense of unknown in the project.

Bregman, on the other hand, fills an immediate need for Boston at third base. Assuming the former Astro signs elsewhere and the Red Sox grab Bichette, they may have to re-enter the market to acquire yet another infielder. This is possible for the aggressive Boston front office, but it would be an easier move just to bring back Bregman.

Red Sox Execs Hoping to Revamp Team’s Infield

One undeniable plus in Boston’s pursuit of Bichette is the fact that he is four years younger than Bregman. The former Blue Jay has only just entered his prime and will turn 28 in March. Bregman, while a key veteran in the team’s clubhouse in 2025, is set to be 32 when the 2026 campaign begins.

Whichever player the Red Sox opt to chase harder, they need to secure at least one of them. Boston is in the process of reloading, and the infield is a key area of focus for top exec Craig Breslow. Along with Bichette and Bregman, the team has also been linked with several significant trades throughout the offseason.
