Red Sox Predicted to Land Star Slugger by Upping Ante

The Boston Red Sox look increasingly likely to resort to plan C in their hopes of revamping their infield. Boston’s previous top priority this offseason was to re-sign Alex Bregman. The highly-rated third baseman, however, opted to join the Chicago Cubs instead. Fellow infielder Bo Bichette immediately became a contingency plan for the club, and while an agreement may still happen, he seems set to sign elsewhere.

If Bichette does not join the Red Sox, they will have to move on to other targets. One particular free agent that is now being heavily linked with Boston is Eugenio Suarez. It was revealed on January 12 that the team previously pursued the slugger ahead of the 2025 trade deadline. At the time, the Red Sox wanted the versatile Suarez to move over to first base. This was, of course, when Bregman was manning third base at Fenway Park.

Nevertheless, Boston now has a major hole to fill at third with Bregman in Chicago. As a result, Bleacher Report is predicting that the Red Sox will sign Suarez and play him at the hot corner. The outlet points out that Boston desperately needs an infielder and power hitter, and Suarez would check multiple boxes.

Suarez smashed 49 home runs in 2025 between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners. The feat is even more impressive when considering that both of these stadiums, particularly T-Mobile Park in Seattle, are not exactly hitter-friendly. Fenway Park, on the other hand, would be the perfect place for the right-handed slugger to hit. Suarez has four home runs and 14 RBIs in 10 career games at the historic stadium.

Boston Red Sox Could Entice Eugenio Suarez by Offering Longer Contract

Suarez has been patient so far this winter when looking for a new team. The move could soon very well pay off in a big way. The 34-year-old veteran will undoubtedly be more in demand now that Bregman is off the table. While the slugger was previously expected to sign a two-year deal in free agency, he could now receive a three-year contract.

It has been reported that the Mariners would be open to bringing back Suarez. According to The Seattle Times, the reigning American League West champions have capped their offer to the infielder at two years, $30 million. Suarez, however, will almost certainly be able to fetch a higher salary with another team.

Although several teams remain interested in Suarez, Boston could win the sweepstakes by offering the veteran the additional year under contract. Giving the 34-year-old slugger an extra year could be risky. Nevertheless, the Red Sox are desperate to add to their lineup to challenge in the ultra-competitive American League East division.

Signing Suarez Would Help Red Sox Avoid Losing More Prospects

Boston, however, does have other infield options. If they were to miss out on Suarez, they could look to the trade market. The club has already made multiple moves so far this offseason and does not seem scared to continue swapping players with other teams. Boston does have to be careful not to deplete their highly-rated farm system too much, though.

Ultimately, Suarez appears to be the best option at the moment for the Red Sox. Securing his signature would fill a massive hole in their lineup, while also helping hold on to key prospects. The club has to make a major splash this offseason, both to keep pace in the division and to appease its fan base.
