The rumor mill is swirling around Houston Astros‘ All-Star infielder Isaac Paredes and how likely he is to be traded at some point this season. The Boston Red Sox have been one of the most active teams in MLB this season in terms of trade, and could be looking to make a splash move to land another infielder. The logjam with the Red Sox outfield has been well documented, but it appears the trade rumors may be shifting to Wilyer Abreu, especially after the Jarren Duran rumors seemingly have been put to sleep after manager Alex Cora’s lineup update.

A recent MLB mock trade idea by Sports Illustrated.com has the Red Sox moving on from Wilyer Abreu for Isaac Paredes and pitcher Miguel Ullola.

Is This a Good Trade Idea for the Red Sox?

Don’t shoot the messenger here, but Sports Illustrated.com’s Ryan Shea recently put together the enticing trade package for the Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros to ponder.

The rumors surrounding Isaac Paredes have been loud all offseason, as the Astros don’t really have any room in their infield for Paredes, which is shocking. With the Red Sox needing to potentially get rid of one of their three outfielders not named Roman Anthony or Ceddanne Rafaela, Abreu might be the odd man out.

Wilyer Abreu has been a really productive player with the bat, but as of now, it seems like he would only be utilized as a DH. In 2025, he hit 22 home runs and posted an OPS+ of 112 over 115 games. In 2024? Abreu hit 15 home runs in 135 games. In both seasons, he posted a bWAR over 3.0, which is why if the Red Sox do trade him, they would have to get a haul in return.

Is Isaac Paredes a Good Fit in Boston?

Boston has a crowded infield, but let’s now act like it’s one of the best infields in baseball. After losing Alex Bregman in free agency, Boston really only has its first base and shortstop situation figured out. They traded for Caleb Durbin and signed Isiah Kiner-Falefa to help with that infield depth, but Isaac Paredes’ production level with the bat over the past few seasons is much better than Durbin and Kiner-Falefa combined.

Yep, there I say it. Paredes has been named to the All-Star team in back-to-back seasons, so really, if one of the sides were to turn this deal down, it’s likely the Houston Astros.

Paredes dealt with some injury in 2025, which limited him to 102 games, but he hit 20 home runs with a 123 OPS+. Adding him would be a huge power boost to the Red Sox’ infield.

Sorry Red Sox fans, but expect these trade rumors to persist, and if anything, it’s a good thing, because only good teams are linked to high-profile trades like this, which means a lot of aggregators believe Boston has a real shot at winning a World Series with one or two more pieces.
