Plenty of Boston Red Sox fans had already dubbed Roman Anthony the future of the franchise within days of his MLB debut last season. The rest of his impressive shortened rookie season turned doubters into believers and believers into fanatics.
And just when you thought the hype couldn’t get any bigger, Anthony made a resounding statement with team USA in the World Baseball Classic. Playing alongside MLB superstars like Aaron Judge and Bryce Harper, Anthony didn’t just fit in, he exceeded everyone’s expectations.
The 21-year-old hit two home runs and had seven RBI in 25 at-bats in the WBC, proving himself as one of the best players in the world in that span.
So, with all of the hype continuing to swirl around him as he heads into his first full MLB season, the question becomes “how will he handle the pressure?”
Anthony Makes Confidence Known Ahead of Season
If his calm external demeanor speaks for the internal pressure he feels, then Anthony may just have ice in his veins. In an interview with the Boston Globe, Anthony made a declarative statement about his confidence heading into the 2026 season.
“It doesn’t change anything that happens for me,” Anthony said to the Globe. “Pressure or expectations, it’s only as big as you make it, right? I understand the way that (manager Alex Cora) looks at me and believes in me, and the way that (chief baseball officer Craig Breslow) and the front office and people invested in me and the guys around me — we believe in each other so much that nobody’s putting pressure on me.
Nothing has really changed — before I got the contract, after I got the contract. The way I play, the way I approach things, it’s the same thing. I’m just playing a game that I love in a city that I love.”
In a city that embraces athletes who in turn embrace them, Anthony has already made his mark on the Boston community. “I’m just playing a game that I love in a city that I love” — your local townie from a Boston suburb just said in a thick Boston accent “There’s just something about this Anthony kid I just love,” (please read that back in a Boston accent with some swears added in unnecessary spots to get the full effect).
Youth Movement Beginning to Take Shape in Boston
Alongside Anthony, the Red Sox farm system has delivered plenty of exciting young players in the last handful of years, with many of them making the Opening Day roster. Marcelo Mayer and Connelly Early are the two most exciting young players outside Anthony to make the roster, and others like Payton Tolle and Kristian Campbell aren’t far behind them.
You can even look back to Ceddane Rafaela, Jarren Duran, and Wilyer Abreu; homegrown talent that is emerging in front of our eyes, and talent that really came together last season.
With that momentum from the magical 2025 season and every young player hopefully ready to take a step forward, this Red Sox team is certainly poised to make some noise this season.
