The Chicago Cubs are beginning spring training with high hopes of being a World Series contender at the end of the 2026 MLB season.
Following an aggressive offseason that saw the team acquire starting pitcher Edward Cabrera in a trade with the Miami Marlins and sign star third baseman Alex Bregman in free agency, the Cubs look like a potential favorite in the National League.
Of course, they’ll be going up against the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, and other teams, but Chicago has the talent to hold its own.
While the team made some aggressive moves to bring in outside talent, the Cubs also have quite a bit of in-house talent. One of their young players with an incredibly bright future is pitching prospect Jaxon Wiggins.
Right now, with spring training games about to begin, Wiggins is drawing quite a bit of attention from the coaching staff.
Chicago Cubs Prospect Jaxon Wiggins Is Turning Heads Already
As shared by Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune, team manager Craig Counsell heaped praise on the young pitcher. It’s clear that he sees a bright future ahead for Wiggins.
“If you watch him, he’s throwing very professional appearances in his bullpens and his live (BP), very professional,” Craig Counsell said.
“He absolutely has the ability to do it. But the reps take it because you’re stacking on better pitch shapes, execution, better hitters as you move up. So you’re just stacking all these things up and one of them is better execution.”
After seeing Cade Horton come up last season and play at a high level, Chicago is hoping to see Wiggins do the same thing. The Cubs might have an excellent young one-two pitching punch in the near future.
What Does Jaxon Wiggins Bring to the Table for the Cubs?
For those who don’t know much about Wiggins, let’s take a look at what he has produced during his time within Chicago’s organization.
Wiggins, a 24-year-old pitching prospect, was drafted with the No. 68 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. Since being drafted, he has shown off elite potential.
Last season in the minor leagues with the Cubs, Wiggins made 18 starts and appeared in 19 games. He compiled a 3-4 record to go along with a 2.19 ERA, a 1.03 WHIP, 97 strikeouts, 36 walks, and 78 innings pitched.
Even though that is a small sample size, the numbers are impressive. Wiggins was a dynamic star at the minor league level in 2025.
While fans shouldn’t necessarily expect him to start off the season as a key part of the Major League roster, there is a chance that Wiggins could be called up at some point in 2026. Chicago has a very bright future ahead with Wiggins and Horton being long-term arms for the franchise.
