The Chicago Cubs are entering the upcoming 2026 MLB season as one of the top potential World Series contenders in the National League.
After a slow start to the MLB offseason, Jed Hoyer and the front office were able to put in a lot of work. They acquired starting pitcher Edward Cabrera in a big trade with the Miami Marlins and quickly followed that move up with the signing of star free agent third baseman Alex Bregman.
Those two moves have firmly placed the Cubs on the map. After a run to the NLDS last season, Chicago appears to be a much-improved team heading into the upcoming campaign.
Seiya Suzuki was a big part of the team’s offensive success last season. He put together the best year of his MLB career, although now he’s looking to earn a long-term future with the Cubs.
Seiya Suzuki Provides Major Update About His Future with the Chicago Cubs
As shared by Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun Times, Suzuki is very interested in remaining with the Cubs moving forward.
“I want to work hard and perform well, and hopefully they say yes,” Suzuki said of a possible contract extension.
Throughout the 2025 MLB season, Suzuki ended up playing in 151 games. He hit a career-high 32 home runs, drove in a career-high 103 RBI, and produced a slash line of .245/.326/.478.
Suzuki is now 31 years old. The star outfielder from Tokyo, Japan has begun making his mark in Chicago. Assuming his production continues at a high level this season, it would be surprising to see the Cubs have any intention of moving on from him.
Only time will tell, but the outfielder is clearly enjoying his time in Chicago.
What Should Be Expected from the Cubs This Season?
After going all-in this offseason to contend in the National League, the Cubs are expecting to be in the running for a World Series championship. They will have to go up against other NL teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets, but Chicago feels like it can hold its own.
Jim Bowden of The Athletic has predicted that the Cubs will win the NL Central division. That would put them in a good position come playoff time.
Fans had grown frustrated with Chicago’s lack of aggression in recent years. They can’t be frustrated anymore. The Cubs have shown that they want to win and win big heading into the 2026 season.
It will be interesting to see what the future has in store for Suzuki and Chicago. Whether or not the two parties will stick together long-term or not remains to be seen, but it’s clear that Suzuki is interested in making that happen.
