The Chicago Cubs and Jed Hoyer have put together an impressive offseason thus far and have gone all-in on trying to win now.

After a slow start to the MLB offseason period, the Cubs made their first big move by pulling off a trade with the Miami Marlins for young starting pitcher Edward Cabrera. In that move, Chicago gave up top outfield prospect Owen Caissie.

Following that move, the Cubs swung big again. They were able to sign star free agent third baseman Alex Bregman to a lucrative five-year, $175 million contract. Just like last offseason, Chicago was battling with the Boston Red Sox for Bregman, but this time the Cubs came out on top.

With that being said, Chicago has pulled off another heist from the Red Sox.

Chicago Cubs Bring in 24-Year-Old Infielder

As shared by the Major League Baseball transactions log, the Cubs have signed 24-year-old shortstop and utility man Karson Simas to a minor-league contract this week.

Simas, who was a 25th-round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, has been in Boston’s organization for the last seven years. He has been unable to work his way up to the Major League level, but he’s an intriguing pickup for Chicago nonetheless.

Throughout his tenure with the Red Sox organization, Simas played in 334 minor league games. He hit nine total home runs to go along with 111 RBI and a slash line of .222/.302/.300.

Obviously, those numbers don’t jump off the charts. The Cubs are taking a flier on a player who they hope their development staff can turn around. If that doesn’t work, Chicago will move on without losing anything.

Fans Should Be Ecstatic About the Cubs’ Offseason

Looking closer at the offseason the Cubs have put together, fans should be very excited about both the present and the future. Chicago has turned over a new leaf.

Over the last few years, the Cubs have operated more like a small market team than a big market. Fans have grown extremely frustrated with that approach.

This offseason, it was clear that the franchise wanted to win. Bringing in both Cabrera and Bregman, especially using deferred money on the veteran third baseman, showed a new approach. Chicago wants to win and it wants to win now.

Making minor league moves like the deal for Simas won’t move the needle for the Cubs. However, it shows that Hoyer and company are remaining proactive as they look to add more talent. Whether or not the big moves are done or not for Chicago remains to be seen.

Zac Gallen has been one name that has been brought up as a possible late-offseason fit for the Cubs. It’s unlikely that he’ll end up signing with Chicago, but it’s clear the team is still open for business.

Expect to continue hearing rumors about the Cubs. Hoyer has put in a lot of work this offseason and the 2026 season is looking much more promising than it did a month ago.
