The Detroit Tigers will take on the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday, February 25, as the club continues its Spring Training schedule with the regular season quickly approaching. One player who will not be suiting up for the contest is Troy Melton, as the team has released an injury update on the top pitching prospect. His status for Opening Day is now in doubt.
The talented right-hander will not pitch in Spring Training games as he nurses arm soreness, per manager A.J. Hinch, relayed by Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press. “We’re doing everything we can,” Hinch told Petzold. “We’ll have an update in the next medical report now that he’s not on the list to pitch right now. I’ll have a better update when I know more.”
It’s a disappointing result for Melton after he emerged as a strong contributor down the stretch in 2025. He became an integral part of the pitching staff in the playoffs, including tossing eight innings of one-run ball against the Seattle Mariners in the American League Divisional Series.
Detroit Tigers Pitcher Troy Melton Dealing With Arm Soreness
The 25-year-old Melton made his debut in late July. He struggled in his first start, but completely dominated in his first appearance at Comerica Park. The right-hander posted seven scoreless innings with five strikeouts in a 5-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Melton would stick on the big-league roster for the rest of the season, though he bounced between the starting rotation and the bullpen.
Melton compiled a strong 2.76 ERA across his first 45.2 innings in the majors. His 20% strikeout rate was underwhelming, but he kept the walks in check (8.3% BB%) and got groundballs at an average clip. Melton’s 4.63 xFIP and 4.30 SIERA suggest he may have been fortunate to prevent runs at the level he did in 2025. His 49.2% hard-hit rate is a concern, albeit in a small sample size.
While his postseason debut against the Cleveland Guardians in the Wild Card round was a disaster (four earned runs, one out recorded), Melton bounced back with a standout performance in the following round. He drew the start in Game 1 of the ALDS and came through with four innings of one-run ball. Melton then came back on short rest to contribute three scoreless innings in Game 4, earning the victory out of the bullpen. He chipped in another scoreless frame in the marathon 15-inning Game 5.
How Will the Tigers Replace Melton?
There’s been no official timetable for Melton, but the fact that he won’t suit up at all in the spring suggests he’s doubtful to break camp with the club. He was set to function as a depth starter/bullpen piece heading into the 2026 campaign. Detroit was set in the rotation with free agents Framber Valdez and Justin Verlander joining Tarik Skubal, Jack Flaherty, and Casey Mize, but the options thin out quickly behind them.
Right-hander Drew Anderson likely slots into the long relief role that could’ve gone to Melton. The 31-year-old hasn’t appeared in the big leagues since 2021. Anderson has spent the past four seasons pitching in Asia, first in NPB and most recently in KBO.
