The Tarik Skubal conversation refuses to cool, and now it comes with a timeline.

After weeks of speculation about whether the Detroit Tigers might move their generational ace before Opening Day, ESPN’s Jesse Rogers introduced a new angle that reframes the entire saga. Rogers predicted that Skubal won’t be traded this winter at all—but instead will land with the Los Angeles Dodgers at the July trade deadline.

That projection matters because it aligns almost perfectly with how the Dodgers actually operate—and why they remain the most logical landing spot in baseball.

Why July Makes Sense for the Dodgers

Rogers’ reasoning cuts straight to the Dodgers’ greatest advantage: they don’t need Tarik Skubal to justify a rebuild, or even a long-term gamble. They need him to finish something.

Los Angeles is chasing a third straight World Series title, a feat modern baseball almost never allows. According to Rogers, the Dodgers are one of the few teams that can afford to trade for Skubal as a rental if it meaningfully increases their chances of completing a three-peat. Where other teams would need to extend Skubal immediately to justify surrendering a massive prospect haul, the Dodgers don’t face that pressure.

They already operate with urgency. Their window is now.

Los Angeles also doesn’t need to rush. The Dodgers have rotation depth, payroll flexibility created through deferred contracts, and a farm system capable of absorbing one more aggressive move. Waiting until July allows them to see how their own staff holds up, how the market develops, and which contenders blink first.

If Skubal hits the deadline still wearing a Tigers uniform, the Dodgers can strike from a position of clarity rather than speculation.

Why Detroit Might Let This Play Out

From the Tigers’ perspective, a July trade could actually strengthen their leverage.

The Detroit Tigers control Skubal through 2026 and know his value won’t erode if he continues pitching like the best starter in the sport. If Detroit hangs around the playoff picture, there’s no urgency to move him. If they fall out of contention, the urgency shifts—not to Detroit, but to the buyers.

That’s when contenders tend to overpay.

Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris has already stated he doesn’t believe in “untouchable players,” and extension talks with Skubal remain far apart. Holding him through the first half allows Detroit to compete honestly while preserving the nuclear option if the standings turn south.

And if that moment arrives, the Dodgers loom larger than any rival. They can stomach the cost of a rental. They can handle the optics. And they can survive the outcome even if Skubal ultimately reaches free agency.

That’s the part that makes Rogers’ prediction feel less like a hot take and more like a roadmap. The Dodgers don’t need to win the offseason. They need to win October.

If that means pushing all their chips to the middle in July for the best pitcher in baseball, history suggests they won’t hesitate.
