The New York Mets have had a quiet all-around offseason, although the rumor mill has heated up quite a bit lately surrounding superstar outfielder Kyle Tucker.
After losing both Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz earlier this offseason, fans have grown frustrated with the offseason the Mets have had thus far. All of that frustration could completely disappear should the team be able to lure Tucker to New York.
With that being said, the Mets have been battling both the Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays to sign Tucker. At this point in time, a new update has been given about what kind of deal New York is offering.
According to a report from Mike Puma of the New York Post, the Mets are offering a four-year contract to Tucker.
“The Mets, according to a source, have a four-year offer on the table for Kyle Tucker,” Puma wrote on X. “@JimDuquetteGM first suggested yesterday the Mets had possibly offered that length.”
It’s a shorter deal than he had wanted to begin the offseason, but Puma has also shared that New York is offering him $50 million per season in the four-year contract.
“The Mets’ staggering $50 million per-year offer to the star free-agent outfielder is over four seasons.”
Where Do the New York Mets Stand With Kyle Tucker?
Even though Tucker would prefer a longer deal, one has to think that he has interest in playing for the Mets on a four-year deal worth $50 million per season.
Where does New York stack up among the competition? Unfortunately, that is where things take a negative turn.
While the Mets are still involved in the running for Tucker, the Blue Jays seem to be the clear favorite at this point in time. Most of the new updates have given Toronto the clear path to land the superstar outfielder.
ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan recently reported on SportsNet that the Blue Jays could be willing to go up to 10 years on a deal with Tucker to land him. If that is offered and the money is right, they should win the sweepstakes to get him.
The Mets Need to Figure Out a Way to Sign Tucker
Should New York miss out on Tucker, this offseason would end up becoming a major loss.
Losing both Alonso and Diaz was a tough blow. However, there was still a chance that the Mets could salvage. With the free agency market dwindling down on top-tier options, Tucker is the team’s last opportunity to strike big.
One potential option that New York could consider would be to turn its attention to Cody Bellinger. So far, Bellinger and the New York Yankees have been unable to get a new deal done. If the Mets were to come in aggressively, they could steal him away from the crosstown rival.
Another option could be to explore the trade market. Or, the front office could consider signing a lower-tier free agent like Harrison Bader.
Only time will tell what happens with Tucker, but New York is holding out hope that a short-term and higher money deal will intrigue him enough.
