The New York Mets have made two official roster updates on two players after the team’s first victory of the season.

On Friday, the Mets sent utilityman Vidal Brujan and Ben Rortvedt through waivers unclaimed, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

Both Brujan and Rortvedt have gone through the brutal DFA limbo over the past few months. A day before Opening Day, both Brujan and Rortvedt had been DFA’d by the Mets.

Mets Make Two Roster Moves with Vidal Brujan, Ben Rortvedt

MLBTradeRumors.com was quick to this news, and writer Darragh McDonald does a good job of explaining both Brujan and Rortvedt’s contract situation:

“A player with at least three years of service time has the right to reject an outright assignment in favor of electing free agency. However, he needs five years of service to both reject an assignment and also keep his salary commitments in place. Both Bruján and Rortvedt are between three and five years. That means they would have to be willing to leave money on the table to choose free agency.”

Vidal Brujan is a five-year MLB veteran, but has never really been successful at the major league level. He got at least one at-bat with three MLB team’s last season, and is really just a pinch runner at this stage of his career.

Ben Rortvedt has never seen extended time in MLB, but did have 49 at-bats with the Dodgers last season, which earned him a World Series ring.

The most likely scenario is that both of these players will start the season with Triple-A Syracuse.

Other Mets Notes

The New York Mets’ offense looked very good in their Opening Day win against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Rookie Carson Benge hit a home run late in the game, and despite giving up a couple of home runs, Freddy Peralta looked sharp.

The Mets also hit ace Paul Skenes pretty well, which is encouraging for the lineup going forward.

New York made a lot of changes this offseason, and those players who are new additions will be operating under a microscope in the first few weeks of the season, but they all look the part.

Luis Robert Jr. posted two RBIs in the win, and Brett Baty had the big three RBI triple in the first inning.
