The New York Mets, despite a tough start to the 2026 season, actually possess small rays of sunshine that could affect the future of the team. Hidden among the injuries to highly paid free agents and existing veterans is a group of younger players that can make the most of the chances while the veterans recuperate. Anthony DiComo from MLB.com discusses the scenarios and who could expedite the youth movement.
“A.J. Ewing’s presence on Tuesday added one potentially premium bat to the Mets’ lineup. Which is important, because three missing veterans could remain out for some time.”
In his debut, the 21-year-old outfielder hit a triple, drove in two runs, and walked three times against the Detroit Tigers. For all of the criticism lobbed at the president of baseball operations, David Stearns, his ability to find young talent cannot be questioned. In contrast, the organization’s ability to develop said athletes remains to be seen.

Lindor’s Absence Shifts Defensive Priorities
On April 22, Lindor strained his calf. Since then, he has not been seen in the lineup. DiComo provided insight without a timetable.
“The good news is that Lindor is ‘doing better,'” according to manager Carlos Mendoza. He’s no longer in a walking boot, suggesting some level of healing. And he isn’t dealing with any sort of Achilles issue on top of the calf strain, according to president of baseball operations David Stearns.”
The calf strain and Achilles issues align because Achilles issues stem from strained calves that do not properly heal. While the prognosis is nebulous. Meanwhile, Lindor’s absence shifts Bo Bichette from third base to short, bringing both Brett Baty and Ronny Mauricio into the action. Mauricio, still only 25 years old, has power, but neither hits for a high average (.219) nor gets on base (zero walks and 12 strikeouts). Currently, Mauricio is injured with a fracture.
Baty’s offense hasn’t thrilled anyone, with a .285 on-base percentage. Defensively, he has played well at third, even with a quick inning at second. After years of being touted as a top Mets prospect, injuries could see Baty enjoying perhaps his last chance at starting.

Ewing’s Debut Makes Robert Jr. Expendable
Before suffering a lower spine disc herniation, Robert hit .224 with two home runs and ten runs batted in. However, his .327 on-base average suggests that he started to develop a more discernible batting eye. However, DiComo doesn’t believe the centerfielder will return soon.
“The news was more ominous on Robert, who hasn’t played since complaining of back discomfort following an April 26 game against the Rockies. Robert continues to experience lower-back pain, keeping him in a holding pattern with no clear end in sight.”
The lower back remains a tricky area for injury. Everything runs through the core. At the same time, Ewing’s debut doesn’t really make the Mets want to force a quick rehab. Plus, when he returns, regardless of Ewing’s performance, he could see Robert Jr. become a trade chip. Provided the Mets become willing to eat a substantial portion of his contract.

Long-Term Uncertainty Fades Before Temporary Enthusiasm
The Mets need to get healthy and start hitting consistently. A player like Mark Vientos, who has flashed power, must become the everyday first baseman, even when Jorge Polanco returns. Either way, the injury leaves the door open for opportunity.
