The Mets placed third baseman Brett Baty on the 10-day IL on Saturday with an oblique injury.

The New York Mets have arguably the most active team in MLB this offseason in terms of value added via trades. They have brought in the likes of Luis Robert Jr., Marcus Semien, and Freddy Peralta over the last few weeks. The moves solidify the Mets as a top contender in the National League, but are they done making trades?

ESPN.com’s David Schoenfield recently published a story full of mock trades across MLB featuring players who have been the subject of trade rumors, and the Mets are included via a mock trade with the Boston Red Sox for outfielder Wilyer Abreu.

ESPN.com Predicts Mets to Trade Brett Baty

Brett Baty has been a controversial player over the past month of so in terms of his trade availability. Reports have indicated that Baty has suitors, but some folks internal to the Mets organization have been hesitant in declaring what Baty’s role with the 2026 team will be.

ESPN.com’s David Schoenfield proposes that the New York Mets trade Brett Baty to the Red Sox in a player-swap deal for Wilyer Abreu. Abreu is a two-time Gold Glove winner and showed strong power upside in 2025 with 22 home runs.

“The Mets’ signings of Bo Bichette and Jorge Polanco leave Baty without an obvious regular position. The Red Sox have four starting outfielders and need a third baseman. Plus, these two are a perfect match in service time and projected value: Both are still pre-arbitration with four years of team control remaining.”

Brett Baty hit 18 home runs in 2025, but posted a bWAR of 3.1 and drove in 50 runs in 130 games. This feels like a very even trade on paper. Both sluggers are left-handed as well.

Who Says No to This Trade Idea?

So, which side would say No to this trade idea?

It’s hard to tell, especially because the Mets do still have a need in the outfield, and the reports indicate New York might test Baty out in left field, but there will be more on that development when spring training rolls around.

As for Wilyer Abreu, he’s played just three MLB seasons, has two Gold Glove awards in that time span, and has increased his productivity in each year.

Over 115 games in 2025, Abreu’s bWAR was 3.2, and he drove in 69 runs on his way to an OPS+ of 116.

That shows how close these two players are in terms of production on paper. It would just become a matter of who each respective organization believes is a better player currently.
