On April 26, amid a tough losing stretch, the New York Mets decided to designate Tommy Pham for assignment. He was signed by New York just a few weeks before his DFA.

Fast forward to April 29, the Mets have outrighted Pham’s contract to Triple-A Syracuse, but in a non-surprising decision by Pham, who likely doesn’t want to play in the minors, Pham decided to elect free agency, and can now be signed by any of the 30 MLB teams.

All in all, it was a very short-lived stint for Tommy Pham. He received just 13 at-bats and did not record a hit. He walked one time and scored one run. The Mets were taking a flyer on Pham anyway, but he put together a decent enough 2025 campaign to receive another chance.

Tommy Pham has become somewhat of a controversial player over the years. Before his stint with the Mets in 2026, Pham played in 76 games with New York in 2023, and has jumped around nearly half of MLB during his 14-year career.

Here are some reactions from the Mets/MLB world about the recent Tommy Pham News:

@NYM_News: “Tommy Pham has elected free agency after clearing waivers, per Anthony DiComo. He declined a Triple-A Syracuse assignment. Pham went hitless in 13 at-bats with the Mets this season.”
@Jef_Musab: “Oh wow Tommy Pham picked free agency after that rough stretch with the Mets. He went hitless in 13 at bats and struck out seven times. It just did not click this time around. Which team do you think grabs him next?”
@ernestdove: “Tommy Pham went from off the street, to 12 ABs in LOW A to an active MLB roster. I’ll never pretend I know what its like to be a pro baseball player but that seemed like too huge a mountain to climb to be begin with, & could easily IMO explain why he couldnt hit MLB pitching.”

Tommy Pham’s MLB Career

There’s a possibility if no MLB team picks up Tommy Pham, that he will retire from baseball at the age of 38.

Here is the list of all the MLB teams Tommy Pham has played for in this point of his career: St. Louis Cardinals, San Diego Padres, New York Mets, Tampa Bay Rays, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, Chicago White Sox, Boston Red Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks, and the Kansas City Royals.

Playing for that many MLB teams is like a double-sided coin of what Pham’s career has been. On one side, he has been good enough to stick around and continue to get added opportunities, but playing with 10 organizations over 14 years also signals that Pham had never been good enough to stick around for a long period of time, except with the Cardinals, where he played for the first six seasons of his career.

So after the Cardinals stint, that’s nine MLB organizations being a part of in roughly eight years.
