Despite, for now, the backing by the president of baseball operations, David Stearns, New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza should still be on the hot seat, especially after the recent firings of Rob Thomson and Alex Cora.

The Mets, with a payroll north of $370 million, have a record of 12-22 (worst in the National League). The months of March and April were a nightmare in Queens, and there will certainly be wholesale changes, but does Carlod Mendoza need to be fired? A recent bold predictions piece by Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer features Carlod Mendoza being fired by the end of May.

Rymer explains why Carlos Mendoza could be the next MLB manager to lose their spot as clubhouse leader:

“What if the question isn’t how much Mendoza is to blame for the Mets’ disastrous start, but whether the Mets have anything to lose by firing him? It really is the latter question that matters right now. The club’s odds of making the playoffs have already cratered, going from a high of 88.6 percent to just 27.7 percent at FanGraphs. A situation like that calls for a Hail Mary.”

The only MLB team with more losses since June of last year? The Colorado Rockies.

Here’s what David Stearns said about backing Mendoza:

“We don’t view this as a manager problem, and we don’t intend to make a change.”

That could, of course, all be hooplau if the Mets don’t start picking up some wins, which it doesn’t seem like they are.

In reality, it should be David Stears that takes the blame for constructing a poor roster, but the Mets are truly in a heap of trouble, possibly for years to come. It’s going to be very hard for Mets fans to buy into this team, given that all the franchise players had been shipped away before the season, and now the likes of Jorge Polanco, Francisco Lindor, and Luis Robert Jr. are all injured.

What Should the Mets do With Carlos Mendoza?

Mets have decided to stick with Carlos Mendoza for the time being.

So, what should the Mets do with Carlod Mendoza?

With 22 losses already this season, the Mets are on a fast track to at least 90 L’s, and if that trend continues through May, it’s very plausible to think the Mets will bring in a new clubhouse leader.

And what is David Stearns supposed to say when asked about the potential managerial turmoil?

Again, Stearns needs a scapegoat here, and much like the Red Sox and Phillies situations with Alex Cora and Rob Thomson, it’s oftentimes the manager who gets outed.
