New York Mets Bullpen Named ‘Winner’ of 2025 MLB Trade Deadline

All things considered, the New York Mets may have been one of the most active teams on July 31st, which has now passed, and is being digested by every reporter and writer that covers the sport. The Mets are in a tight division race with the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East, and it was no secret to anyone that their bullpen had needed reinforcement. Still, I don’t think anyone could have foreseen the number of wholesale moves they made.

The biggest being acquiring Ryan Helsley from the St. Louis Cardinals, another relief arm that can touch 100 MPH on essentially every pitch, and pairing him with Edwin Diaz is a scary sight for opponents if they are trailing the Mets in the eighth and ninth innings.

Inside the Mets Moves: Being Named a ‘Winner’ of the Deadline

The Mets also made a pair of significant bullpen additions, bringing in Tyler Rogers from the San Francisco Giants and lefty specialist Gregory Soto from the Baltimore Orioles.

In a “Winners and Losers” trade piece by Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller, here is what he had to say about the Mets’ potentially lethal bullpen:

“The Díaz/Helsley combo alone has the potential to be incredible. Right up there with that window when the Brewers had Devin Williams setting up for Josh Hader, or when the 2015 Yankees had Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller both receive votes for AL Cy Young. Also adding a desperately needed southpaw in Soto and maybe the most durable reliever in baseball in Rogers turns a bullpen that had been an Achilles’ heel into a legitimate strength.”

Tyler Rogers has sneakily been one of the best relievers in baseball this season. The submariner has posted a 1.80 ERA in 50 innings and 53 appearances. He had led the National League three times in total appearances and is putting together his best season. Rogers is a soft contact guy who has excellent control. His BB/9 is a microscopic 0.7. Pairing Rogers with Ryan Helsley and Edwin Diaz will be nearly impossible for opposing hitters to adjust to.

All three of the bullpen additions the Mets made are potential rentals, but that doesn’t have any bearing on this season. Frankly, if New York ends up in the Fall Classic, it will be a job well done for David Stearns and Steve Cohen, who gave up a decent amount of prospect capital for the three relievers.

New York Are Now Poised for a Playoff Run

With the starting rotation getting healthier for New York, they made all the necessary additions at the trade deadline. Although they did give up Blade Tidwell, Drew Gilbert, Jesus Baez, and Nate Dohm, the Mets front office was likely prepared to part ways with a decent prospect haul to acquire some of these names.

However, if the relievers they added help the Mets win the National League East and beyond, it will be a massive win for the organization. The NL is now absolutely loaded and will be a gauntlet for whoever wins the pennant.
