The New York Mets are in the middle of a pennant chase as the MLB regular season winds down this month, and New York attempts to improve their positioning in the National League Wild Card race. Currently, they hold the last spot, and as it stands now, would head on the road to Dodger Stadium for a three-game Wild Card series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
While the Mets focus on the current season, they are already eyeing potential big moves in player personnel after the season.
One of the Mets‘ biggest front office decisions will be regarding five-time All-Star and franchise icon, Pete Alonso.
New York Mets Expected to Move On From Pete Alonso
In a Bleacher Report “Re-Sign or Move On” piece, Alonso’s name is brought up, and writer Tim Kelly believes he will go via free agency after the season:
It was an uncomfortable first trip into free agency for Alonso, who seemed more interested in the Mets than they were in him. Ultimately, he returned on a two-year, $54 million deal that will allow him to opt out this offseason. Considering he’s hit 31 home runs and has an .862 OPS, he is going to opt out. Coming off of a better season than last year and with no qualifying offer attached to him this time, Alonso should make out better in free agency. But president of baseball operations David Stearns really didn’t seem interested in giving a long-term deal to Alonso last offseason.”
Alonso is having another prototypical massive offensive season for the Mets. Moreover, 2025 marked the fourth straight All-Star appearance for the first baseman. In 138 games this season, Alonso has 31 home runs and 110 RBIs. He’s on pace to finish the season with 162 games for consecutive seasons. However, the Mets and Stearns are in a precarious situation with his free agency. Alonso plans to exercise his player option after signing a two-year, $54 million deal before this season.
What Would New York Have to Offer Alonso?
This is where the contract details get tricky for Alonso and his contract negotiations. Alonso is now in his age-30 season and is a Scott Boras client. Boras has a history of pulling star players out of their current deals to maximize player value in a new, more lucrative contract. This is the exact case for Alonso, who has been one of the best power hitters in the entire sport over the past four seasons. Alonso has 151 home runs and counting since the start of the 2022 season, and 257 career home runs.
It would be a disaster for the Mets if they had to let go of this franchise icon, but you can’t fault Alonso for seeking a deal that he believes is worth his value. Alonso will likely seek a five- to six-year deal worth up to $200 million.
That would give him an AAV around $30-35 million, and make him one of the highest-paid first basemen in the sport. The Mets are consistently one of the highest payroll teams in MLB, but it’s just a matter of whether they will re-sign Alonso before the 2026 season.
