The New York Mets have been one of the busiest teams in baseball this offseason and will exit the offseason as one of the biggest winners as well.

So far this offseason, the Mets have been able to make major moves in all areas.

New York has signed former Toronto Blue Jays star Bo Bichette to play third base. In addition, the Mets have acquired ace starting pitcher Freddy Peralta from the Milwaukee Brewers and have also made bullpen additions in Devin Williams and Luke Weaver.

With those moves, New York has firmly positioned itself to be a top-tier World Series contender entering the 2026 MLB season. Beating the Los Angeles Dodgers will be no easy task, but the Mets have the talent to compete with them.

Keeping that in mind, a new report has shared that New York did check in with interest in acquiring Detroit Tigers superstar starting pitcher Tarik Skubal.

New York Mets Looked Into a Potential Tarik Skubal Trade

Now that the Mets have acquired Peralta from the Brewers, they’re almost certainly out on any potential Skubal trade that could be made. However, they had interest.

According to a new report from MLB insider Joel Sherman, New York checked in on Skubal. It didn’t take long for the Mets to find out the astronomical price tag the Tigers would have asked for in return.

“The Mets were all over the starter market,” Sherman wrote. “They checked on Detroit’s Tarik Skubal, but got indications it might take their five best prospects and thought even for the majors’ best pitcher it was too much.”

Skubal would have been an epic addition for New York. Despite the temptation to make that kind of a blockbuster move, the price was too much. The Mets made the right decision to pass.

At this point, Skubal’s future in Detroit is up in the air. It’s quite possible the Tigers could still trade him at some point in the future, but New York decided to go in a different direction.

Looking Closer at the Mets’ MLB Offseason Haul

This offseason has been a massive success for the Mets. Each move they have made has a chance to pay off in a big way for the franchise.

Bichette was given a three-year, $126 million contract. That’s a big deal to give him, but the 27-year-old infielder is coming off of a season with the Blue Jays where he hit 18 home runs to go along with 94 RBI and a slash line of .311/.357/.483. He may not be the best defensive infielder, but his bat will be valuable.

Peralta was one of the best starters in baseball last season with Milwaukee. He made 33 starts, compiling a 17-6 record to go along with a 2.70 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 3.1 K/BB ratio, and 176.2 innings pitched.

Williams and Weaver both played for the New York Yankees last season. As for Williams, he appeared in 67 games and went 4-6 with a 4.79 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP, a 3.6 K/BB ratio, 18 saves, 15 holds, and four blown saves. Weaver recorded a 3.62 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 3.6 K/BB ratio, eight saves, 21 holds, and four blown saves in 64 innings.

Heading into the 2026 MLB season, the Mets have to feel good about their chances. Skubal would have been a fun addition, but New York has done just fine.
