The New York Yankees‘ red-hot start to the 2026 campaign has quickly faded, as the team suffered its fourth-straight loss on Saturday. The Yanks could not grind out a win over the Tampa Bay Rays, as they suffered a 5-4 defeat in 10 innings, and once again, all eyes were on manager Aaron Boone and his management of the team’s lineup.
In the top of the ninth inning, New York had an opportunity to break a 3-3 tie when Randal Grichuk came up to the plate with runners on the corners and two out. Rather than pinch-hitting for him, Boone opted to let him hit, and he ended up flying out to center field on the first pitch of the at-bat. After the game, Boone admitted that he should have been replaced in this clutch situation.
Aaron Boone Gets Real on Big Mistake in Yankees’ Loss to Rays
For the past few years, pretty much every managerial decision that Boone has made has been the subject of widespread attention from Yankees fans. Of course, with the team currently in the middle of an ugly losing streak, all eyes are going to turn to Boone. Unsurprisingly, he’s facing the wrath of fans again in the wake of the team’s latest defeat.
Grichuk was used as a pinch runner for Giancarlo Stanton in the top of the eighth inning, and he proceeded to score on a two-run double from Jose Caballero. With the game hanging in the balance just an inning later, though, he found himself up at the plate for the first time in the game. While he’s only taken 10 at-bats this year, Grichuk has yet to record a hit this season.
Still available on the bench was Paul Goldschmidt, who is admittedly only hitting .200 this year. And yet, he was likely a better option in this situation than Grichuk, who hasn’t been able to do much of anything right so far this year. Boone opted to ride with Grichuk, though, and he paid the price for that decision. After the game, Boone revealed why he stuck with Grichuk, while also noting that he understands why this move is being second-guessed now.
“Yeah, definitely could have, should have,” Boone said when asked about pinch-hitting for Grichuk. “Just felt like it was a good spot for him.”

Hindsight is 20/20, but it’s becoming more and more concerning that fans can play devil’s advocate for just about every more Boone makes and put together a strong argument that he made the wrong decision. Boone is already on thin ice with the Yanks’ rabid fanbase, and this loss to the Rays likely won’t help him out very much.
The season is still young, but New York’s lead atop the competitive American League East division has already shrunk in the blink of an eye. After suffering a pair of losses to the Rays, the Yankees will look to avoid getting swept, with their final game of the series scheduled for 1:40 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon.
