Derek Jeter Defends Yankees Owner Hal Steinbrenner Despite Increasing Fan Frustration

Former Yankees Captain and Hall of Fame shortstop Derek Jeter has publicly addressed the Yankees’ lackluster offseason and current roster heading into 2026, including, to an extent, coming to the defense of Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner.

Jeter emphasized that when it comes to teams playing their best seasons, it’s about heating up at the right moment, in which Jeter states; “It’s a long season. I used to say it when I played, and people got tired of me saying it, “the best teams make it to the postseason, and the hottest team wins”, says Jeter in a recently published Fox News Digital Interview article.

When Jeter was asked whether he liked the Yankees‘ current standing, Jeter responded by saying, “It all comes down to the trade deadline, man. Teams change drastically at the trade deadline”, stated Jeter.

The Yankees World Series Or Bust Philosophy

Jeter understands the Yankees’ World Series-or-bust motto and expectations, having lived by it himself as a Yankees legend who won five World Series titles, which included 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2009. When talking about this mentality, specifically as it relates to Yankees fans, Jeter stated, “Yankee fans, they have high expectations. They’ve always had high expectations. For them, if you don’t win the World Series, it’s a failure in that sense. I have the same mindset, so I get the frustration”, Jeter stated.

With the Los Angeles Dodgers winning back-to-back World Series championships in 2024 and then again in 2025, the Yankees fanbase is growing increasingly restless, going on an upcoming 17-year championship drought, which especially hurts after the disaster for Yankees fans in Game 5 of the 2024 World Series two years ago at Yankee Stadium versus the Dodgers.

Jeter did come to the defense of Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner despite the growing frustration amongst the Yankees fanbase, in which he said; “But I’m sure Hal is frustrated as well. Hal’s been willing to go out and get players and put the Yankees in position to win. But ultimately, you have to go out on the field and perform”, says Jeter.

Yankee Fans Growing More Frustrated Watching Dodgers Win Multiple Championships

While what Jeter is saying is true to an extent, it doesn’t diminish the frustration of a Yankees fanbase that has been watching the Los Angeles Dodgers do whatever it takes to win and secure the best talent available, much like the Yankees of old during the George Steinbrenner Era and the dynasty years spanning from 1996 into the early 2000’s. The last team before the Dodgers to repeat as back-to-back World Series Champions was the 98-00 Yankees, a team Jeter was essential to as a member of the core four.

The Yankees haven’t had the most significant offseason either. The highlight of the winter thus far is bringing back Cody Bellinger on a five-year, $162.5 million deal with opt-outs after the second and third years of the contract. The Yankees also brought back Trent Grisham after he accepted a one-year, $22.05 million qualifying offer in November 2025.

The Yankees are running back much of the same roster as 2025, minus the bullpen subtractions, including Devin Williams, Luke Weaver, Mark Leiter Jr., Ian Hamilton, among others. The Yankees are also bringing back utility player Amed Rosario, but have only added two players to the current roster that are external additions and weren’t on the 2025 team, which is Rule 5 Draft selection, right-handed pitcher Cade Winquest, and left-handed pitcher Ryan Weathers, who the Yankees acquired earlier this past month via trade from the Miami Marlins.
