The New York Yankees were able to accomplish their biggest goal coming into the MLB offseason, which was to re-sign star free agent outfielder Cody Bellinger.
While it took quite some time for the two sides to hammer out an agreement, a deal has gotten done. Now, the question becomes, are the Yankees still looking to make more offseason moves to bolster their chance of competing for a World Series run?
After the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets both took major leaps forward with their offseason moves, the Yankees might need to be more aggressive to keep pace.
Keeping that in mind, one New York insider has suggested a trade route the Yankees should look into taking.
MLB.com reporter Bryan Hoch has suggested that the team could consider trading either Jasson Dominguez or Spencer Jones for bullpen help.
“It stands to reason that the Yankees could dangle either Domínguez or Jones if they aim to complete another trade before Opening Day, potentially to upgrade their bullpen, which is presently anchored by David Bednar, Camilo Doval, Fernando Cruz and Tim Hill,” Hoch wrote.
Adding to the Bullpen Would Be Wise for the New York Yankees
Even though there are some quality names on the roster for New York in the bullpen, more relief pitching depth is always needed. The Yankees could land a quality player to help anchor the bullpen by trading either Dominguez or Jones.
Throughout the course of a season, injuries become a key factor. New York can’t afford to head into the 2026 campaign with too little bullpen depth.
Whether or not there is a reliever available on the trade market that would make a deal involving Dominguez or Jones make sense remains to be seen.
It’s an option for the Yankees to consider. However, Brian Cashman finds himself in a situation where he doesn’t have to overpay right now. He could simply wait into the regular season and make a move or two ahead of the trade deadline.
What Moves Have the Yankees Made This Offseason?
Bellinger was obviously the marquee move for New York. He was one of the top free agents available on the market and the Yankees were able to bring him back on a long-term deal.
In addition to Bellinger, New York has brought in names like Paul Blackburn, Ryan Weathers, Marco Luciano, and also re-signed Trent Grisham. The Yankees did lose both Devin Williams and Luke Weaver to free agency.
On the outside looking in, the pitching staff is in decent shape. The Yankees do not need to make a panic trade. But, if a quality option emerges, they should strongly consider taking a long look at adding to the bullpen.
New York has not had the kind of ultra-aggressive offseason that fans have become used to seeing. That might not be a bad thing for the Yankees this year, although beating the Dodgers or Mets will be no easy task. The Toronto Blue Jays are also going to a tough opponent again in 2026.
Expect to continue hearing rumors surrounding the New York franchise. Fans shouldn’t necessarily expect another move, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see Cashman look at bullpen options.
