Yankees Trade Buzz Grows Louder as Infielder’s Future Looks Uncertain

The New York Yankees infielder Oswald Peraza says he’s tuning out the trade chatter. But as the Yankees zero in on Eugenio Suárez, it’s hard not to wonder if Peraza’s silence is the sound of his tenure in pinstripes winding down.

The 25-year-old infielder has become the face of the Yankees’ third base dilemma, struggling to produce at the plate and committing costly errors in the field. His most recent performance against the Toronto Blue Jays—a defensive miscue followed by a run-scoring throwing error—only amplified the pressure on the Yankees’ front office to make a move before the July 31 trade deadline.

“As far as trades and things like that, you have to focus on what you’re doing on a daily basis and focus on the things that you can control,” Peraza told NJ.com’s Randy Miller. It’s a measured response that barely disguises the writing on the wall.

A Glove With Holes, A Bat Without Pop

Peraza has failed to seize the opportunity since taking over third base after Oswaldo Cabrera’s injury. While he showed offensive promise in the minors, his transition to everyday significant league duties has been bumpy. The Yankees’ brass had hoped he’d step into a more permanent role. But his .150 average and lack of power haven’t met expectations. And in New York, expectations aren’t optional.

Third base has become the Yankees’ Achilles’ heel. And with Peraza now an offensively and defensively liable player, the team’s rumored pursuit of Diamondbacks slugger Eugenio Suárez feels more urgent than speculative.

Suarez Trade Rumors Grow Louder

According to Spanish-language Yankees broadcaster Rickie Ricardo, a deal that includes Suárez, right-hander Merrill Kelly, and reliever Jalen Beeks is already on the table. The New York Post have also confirmed the Yankees’ interest. While nothing is official, the smoke is thick enough to suggest a fire is coming soon.

Suárez would be an immediate upgrade. An All-Star slugger with 36 homers and 86 RBIs, he’s also a somewhat capable defender and an emotional spark plug—everything Peraza has struggled to be.

If the Yankees land Suárez, Peraza’s role becomes even murkier. He lacks the versatility of someone like Isiah Kiner-Falefa or the upside of a prospect like George Lombard Jr. Unless he goes back to Triple-A, he’ll likely be benched or packaged in another deadline deal.

With the Yankees in win-now mode and the AL East slipping away, the front office has little room for patience. Peraza might still believe he controls his fate. But in a city that demands production, the clock on that belief is ticking.

Peraza’s comments about controlling the controllables are noble, but they also sound like a player trying to stay focused while watching the floor fall out beneath him. He has talent, but talent only takes you so far when a contender needs answers, not question marks.

If Suárez arrives in the Bronx, don’t be surprised if Peraza heads out. Whether it’s via demotion or trade, the Yankees’ third base experiment may end — and so, perhaps, is Oswald Peraza’s run in New York.
