The 2026 season has certainly been a good one for the New York Yankees so far. At the time of this writing, the Yankees have a 25-11 record and are at the top of the American League East standings. They have also been continuing to stay hot as the season rolls on, as they have won eight out of their last 10 games.
With how this season has been going for the Yankees, it is clear that they are going to be buyers at the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline. This is especially so when noting that the Yankees are never afraid to be big spenders and make bold moves.
Yet, if the Yankees want to upgrade their roster this season, they are going to need to move out some of their current players. Due to this, one of the Yankees’ former top prospects has now been labeled as the team’s top trade candidate to watch between now and this year’s trade deadline.
Oswaldo Cabrera Named Yankees’ Top Trade Candidate to Watch This Season
In a recent article for Bleacher Report, Kerry Miller looked at one player from each MLB team who is most likely to be traded this season. When it came to the Yankees, Miller went with Oswaldo Cabrera.
“There will, of course, be talk of Jasson Domínguez or Spencer Jones as possible trade chips. But when and where does Cabrera fit back into the mix in the Bronx? José Caballero has been great, Ryan McMahon isn’t going anywhere, Amed Rosario has been a more than adequate utilityman and they’re going to bring Anthony Volpe back eventually. If they can swap Cabrera for a bullpen arm, they’ll probably do it,” Miller wrote.
With the Yankees having a surplus of MLB-caliber players, it would be understandable if they decided to move on from Cabrera this season. The 27-year-old certainly has the potential to generate interest around the league, too, as he is a solid utility player who can play several positions.
Cabrera has also become the odd man out on the Yankees. This is because he has spent all of this season down in the minors with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. In 30 games with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre so far this season, he has two home runs, 10 RBIs, and a .211 batting average. Overall, he has had a tough start to the campaign in Triple-A, but his experience and versatility still could help him generate interest.
Yankees’ Cabrera Could Use a Fresh Start
With Cabrera playing in the minors, it is fair to argue that he could use a change of scenery at this point in his career. He is currently blocked from the Yankees’ major league roster because of their strong depth, and it would benefit him to join a team elsewhere.
Cabrera’s major league experience could make him a decent trade chip for the Yankees, too. In 301 career major league games over four seasons with New York, he has 20 home runs, 95 RBIs, and a .234 batting average.
Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see if Cabrera ends up being traded by the Yankees this season from here.
