With spring training underway, the New York Yankees are gearing up for the 2026 MLB season with World Series hopes in mind.
Throughout the course of the offseason, the Yankees opted to take a much more passive approach than normal. Brian Cashman was able to work out a new deal with star outfielder Cody Bellinger, but decided against pursuing a major outside splash move.
Even though New York didn’t make a blockbuster offseason move to add outside talent, the front office will have a chance to do so on the trade market.
More than likely, the Yankees will be a team to watch closely as the MLB trade deadline comes up. However, they aren’t going to rush to make moves. New York is hoping to see talent on the roster step up and provide the team with improvement.
Keeping that in mind, the Yankees have been linked to a potential blockbuster trade for a $325 million star as the 2026 season approaches.
New York Yankees Urged to Consider Blockbuster $325 Million Trade Option
ON SI’s Ryan Shea has come up with a potential trade idea between New York and the Texas Rangers that would see the team acquire star shortstop Corey Seager.
In his suggested deal, the Yankees would give up outfielder Jasson Dominguez, shortstop Anthony Volpe, and right-hander Clarke Schmidt to acquire Seager from the Rangers. That would be a hefty price to pay, but Seager would be a game-changer.
“Acquiring Seager consolidates three uncertain assets into a reliable, high-impact player, reducing positional risk and immediately strengthening the Yankees’ championship window while also boosting his fantasy value into elite Top-5 shortstop territory,” Shea wrote.
Seager is exactly the kind of piece that could power New York from being a playoff contender to a World Series favorite. He’s capable of being the missing piece for the Yankees.
What Would Corey Seager Bring to the Yankees?
During the 2025 MLB season with Texas, the 31-year-old shortstop played in 102 games. He ended up hitting 21 home runs to go along with 50 RBI, while also producing a slash line of .271/.373/.487.
Throughout his entire 11-year MLB career, Seager has recorded 221 home runs, 667 RBI, and a slash line of .289/.362/.509.
Granted, New York may not want to give up Volpe just yet. It sure seems like the Yankees are still invested in giving him a chance to develop to reach his full potential. Just a couple of short years ago, Volpe was expected to become a superstar.
However, if the 2026 MLB season gets off to a slow start, New York could consider shaking some things up.
This is just an idea and suggestion at this point in time. The Yankees may not end up having any interest in Seager. But, it’s something worth monitoring as the season gets underway.
