The New York Yankees enter the 2026 MLB season hoping to make a run at a World Series championship.
With the offseason starting to wind down, the Yankees have received some criticism for not making many outside additions. Cody Bellinger was re-signed to a five-year, $162.5 million contract, but New York decided to more or less run it back from last season.
Brian Cashman is banking on players coming back healthy such as Gerrit Cole and Anthony Volpe. He’s also banking on the Yankees’ farm system continuing to develop.
Speaking of the farm system, New York has some bright young talent coming up. Led by shortstop George Lombard Jr., there are quite a few young players who could become high-impact pieces for the Yankees down the road.
Keeping that in mind, there is one sleeper pitching prospect who has started making some noise.
New York Yankees Have Sleeper Pitching Prospect Worth Watching
Henry Lalane is not a name that many fans will recognize. There will be some New York fans who know about him, but the general baseball fan won’t know who he is.
That could change in the near future.
MLB.com analyst Joe Trezza believes that the left-handed Lalane could become a top-100 prospect soon.
“The Yankees have several hurlers in their pitching-rich system we could mention here, but Lalane gets the nod here in part because he’s one of the youngest,” Trezza wrote. “It also helps that he stands 6-foot-7 and throws left-handed, helping to provide the 21-year-old a solid floor.”
Trezza continued on, going into more detail about what Lalane brings to the mound. He also shared some of the injuries that have already started impacting the young pitcher’s career.
“His ceiling is enhanced by his chance to have three plus pitches, including a fastball that can reach 97 mph,” he wrote. “He missed most of 2025 with shoulder issues, but comes with a ton of talent if he can put those in the rearview mirror.”
Looking Closer at Henry Lalane
At 21 years old, Lalane still has plenty of time to develop and reach his full potential. If he can do that, the future can be anything he wants it to be.
In the 2025 minor league season, the young pitcher made seven starts. He compiled a 0-0 record to go along with a 2.33 ERA, a 1.29 WHIP, 22 strikeouts, and 14 walks.
Throughout his entire minor league career, Lalane has totaled 44 games played and 39 starts, a 3.65 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP, 160 strikeous, 66 walks, and 143 innings pitched.
As previously mentioned by Trezza, Lalane is an intimidating physical presence on the mound. He stands in at 6-foot-7 and 211 pounds. Those physical attributes don’t necessarily mean a lot, but he’ll be a can’t miss player when he’s on the mound.
Granted, there is no guarantee that Lalane will develop into being a key piece for the Yankees’ future. That being said, he’s starting to generate some interest from the media, which is a great sign for his career.
