The New York Yankees have had a bit of a strange offseason to this point. While they have been linked to just about every big name you could imagine, they have yet to make any sort of big splash that will quiet their winning-crazed fanbase. The longer the team goes without making a big move, the more upset their fans are getting.

It doesn’t help the Yankees that they play in arguably the most competitive division in baseball, the American League East. The good news for New York is that its top rival, the Boston Red Sox, has had a similarly quiet offseason. Earlier this week, though, the Sox snatched up left-handed pitcher T.J. Sikkema, a former top draft pick for the Yankees.

The Yankees selected Sikkema in the first round of the 2019 MLB Draft, with the hope being that he could develop into a top-end starter for them. Sikkema dominated during his time in college with the Missouri Tigers, and for a point in time, it looked like he could be on a fast track to find his way to the majors for New York.

Ever since going pro, though, things haven’t gone all that smoothly for Sikkema. After spending a couple of years in the Yankees’ minor league system, he got traded to the Kansas City Royals in a deal for another old friend of the Red Sox, Andrew Benintendi. No matter what level he’s pitched at, though, it’s been a struggle for Sikkema to find his footing.

In 2025, Sikkema spent his season as a member of the Cincinnati Reds organization. Splitting time at Double-A and Triple-A, Sikkema appeared in 23 games (15 starts), posting an 8-4 record with a 4.57 ERA and 72 strikeouts. Now, he’s found his way to Boston, where he’s signed a minor league contract and earned a non-roster invitation to Spring Training.

“Boston signed Sikkema, a 27-year-old left-handed pitcher, to a minor league deal,” Christopher Smith wrote for MassLive. “New York selected him 38th overall in 2019 out of Missouri. The Yankees traded him and two other minor league pitchers to the Royals for Andrew Benintendi on July 27, 2022.”

The Red Sox have done good work when it comes to finding diamonds in the rough for their major league pitching staff, and they will now look to see if they can tap into Sikkema’s potential. The Yankees did well to trade him while they did, but if he finds his footing with the Sox, they could end up regretting their decision to move on from him.

In the meantime, New York’s front office will keep on plugging away when it comes to its efforts to upgrade the team’s roster. There are still several big names available in free agency, and if that doesn’t work, they could turn to the trade market in an effort to make a blockbuster deal. If the Yanks want to compete for a championship in 2026, though, they need to act fast in order to ensure they don’t get left in the dust by the rest of the league.
