The New York Yankees could look to move on from homegrown and hometown star Anthony Volpe.
Volpe had a difficult 2025 season due to injuries, and the Yankees could look to move on from him. MLB insider Ethan Hyatt of JustBaseball predicts the Yankees will sign Bo Bichette this offseason.
“The New York Yankees desperately need to make a big move this offseason, as they’ve watched from the sidelines while the rest of the division has made many moves and improved their rosters,” Hyatt wrote.
“Aside from offering Trent Grisham a Qualifying Offer ($22.05 million), the Yankees have been relatively quiet, and Bo Bichette could be the splash they need to make. For ages, the Yankees have been among the top destinations for star players, and Bichette has certainly tormented them plenty over his years in Toronto.”
Hyatt believes Bichette would be a major upgrade over Volpe in all phases of the game, which would lead to New York trading the star shortstop.
“Anthony Volpe slashed a meager .212/.272/.391 this season, and in the postseason, he struck out in over sixty percent of his plate appearances,” Hyatt added. “Bichette would not only be a superstar addition, but would solve their problem at shortstop.
“Bichette’s defensive ability has always been a little iffy. But Volpe’s -6 OAA ranked him in just the sixth percentile league-wide. Bo’s -10 FRV at shortstop was the worst in baseball this season, but if he can even perform at a league-average mark, he would be an improvement from Volpe in every possible way compared to what they got last year.”
The Yankees selected Volpe 30th overall in the 2019 MLB Draft. He’s from New York and grew up a Yankees fan, but it appears his time with the team could be over.
Volpe Dealt With Injuries in 2025
New York had high hopes that Volpe would take a major step forward in 2025, but that didn’t happen.
A key reason was his shoulder injury, which led to Volpe having surgery in the offseason. However, despite his poor play in 2025, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman remains confident in him.
“Do I believe in Anthony Volpe?” Cashman said at the Winter Meetings. “The answer is yes.”
Yankees manager Aaron Boone, meanwhile, also had high hopes for Volpe and expects him to be better.
“The next step for him is getting more consistent offensively,” Boone said. “That’s what our focus will be with him. For, obviously, the noise around him this year, and the struggles he went through defensively in the middle of the season for that month, it’s really important to note how good he was the final two months, which is more in line with, defensively speaking, who he’s been these first few years.
“The next thing for Anthony is … he’s had a lot of success offensively. But he’s had a lot of valleys, and the challenge for us and for him is going to be to shore those things up to make him more consistent.”
Volpe hit .212 with 19 home runs and 72 RBIs with the Yankees last season. He also committed 19 errors at shortstop.
Volpe Unlikely to Start Season
After New York was eliminated from the playoffs, Volpe underwent surgery on his shoulder.
Volpe has surgery to repair a partially torn labrum. Due to the surgery, Boone confirmed he will miss the start of the season.
The hope for the Yankees is that Volpe will be ready in late April or May, as he will need a rehab stint once the season starts.
New York will open its 2026 MLB season on March 25 against the San Francisco Giants on the road.
