Brian Cashman and the Yankees added a player via the Rule 5 Draft for the first time since 2011.

The New York Yankees and general manager Brian Cashman have not made any huge additions from outside of the roster this offseason.

Most notably, the Yankees did accomplish their biggest goal coming into the offseason. They were able to re-sign star outfielder Cody Bellinger to a lucrative five-year, $162.5 million contract.

Keeping Bellinger will help the New York lineup remain one of the most dangerous in baseball. However, fans were hoping to see the Yankees go all-in on trying to win a World Series in 2026. From a roster move perspective, that hasn’t been the case.

Recently, Cashman spoke out about some of the criticism he has received for New York’s being almost identical to last year.

First, it’s a collection of really talented players,” Cashman said. “It’s not the same roster. I would differ there. We have some players at some point returning from the IL that are important players, Gerrit Cole being obviously one of them. But we’ve had some additions from the second half that got their feet wet with the Yankees, some with success, some with failures.”

Now, team announcer Michael Kay has fired back at those comments and shared that he believes the roster is the same and explained what Cashman should have said.

Michael Kay Responds to Brian Cashman’s Recent Claim About the New York Yankees

During an appearance on ESPN New York radio, Kay spoke out with his opinion. He thinks the roster is the same and shared what he felt Cashman should have said instead.

“You are running it back,” Kay said.

“So rather than fight the words, you are running it back. The answer should be, ‘We’re bringing back the same team because we think that team is great. We think that that team, under the right circumstances, would be able to beat anybody and get to the World Series.’ That’s the answer.”

Kay makes a great point. Cashman clearly feels that the current roster can compete for a championship. If that is his thought process, the Yankees would not need to make many aggressive moves.

At the end of the day, wording can be a problem. Cashman’s wording hinted that the team has made changes, which simply isn’t the case.

The Yankees Should Be a Legitimate World Series Contender

While Cashman has been receiving criticism for his words, New York does appear to have the talent necessary to be a World Series contender.

Led by Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Bellinger, the Yankees’ lineup should be one of the best in baseball. They will need other players to step up around their trio of stars, but the talent is in place to score a lot of runs.

As for pitching, New York will be getting Gerrit Cole back at some point during the season. That addition in and of itself will be enormous for the Yankees. Other players, like young shortstop Anthony Volpe, will also get back on the field during the season.

If New York can stay healthy, it can compete. The Yankees will also have a chance to improve at the trade deadline if they see fit to do so.

All of that being said, it will be very interesting to see how the 2026 season unfolds for the team. Cashman is facing a lot of pressure and fans can only hope that he got it right.
