MLB Opening Night is less than two days away, and for the New York Yankees, who are playing in the Netflix special against the San Francisco Giants, their roster feels a bit incomplete at the moment. With the Yankees attempting to cut down their roster before their first game of the season, Jasson Dominguez has been optioned, which could mean. trade is imminent.
At this point, the Yankees really should trade Jasson Dominguez, because there’s no use in keeping him if Dominguez isn’t going to be a part of the everyday fold with the team. He can only develop so much in the minor leagues. A recent MLB mock trade proposal by SI.com features the Yankees making a splash move for Seattle Mariners‘ starter George Kirby in return for Jasson Dominguez, Will Warren, and Oswaldo Cabrera.

According to manager Aaron Boone, the Yanks will roll with a four-man rotation to start the season, but that’s really only because of a few off-days in the first week or so of the season.
Here is the full mock trade breakdown by SI.com’s Thomas Carelli:
“Mariners Get:
- OF, Jasson Dominguez
- SP, Will Warren
- INF, Oswaldo Cabrera
Yankees Get:
- SP, George Kirby”
This is a trade that the Yankees should definitely consider making. Maybe New York doesn’t want to get rid of Will Warren, and that’s fair, but adding George Kirby would be adding another level of depth to the starting rotation before Gerrit Cole returns. Kirby was an All-Star starter in 2023 and posted a 4.21 ERA over 23 starts last season with the Mariners. Seattle has a little bit more room in its outfield to allow Dominguez to develop, and while Oswaldo Cabrera will likely be a big part of this Yankees roster, he was just optioned and won’t make the Opening Night roster.

Will the Yankees Trade Jasson Dominguez
Because it is a mock trade idea, it’s hard to tell when/if the Yankees might think about trading away Jasson Dominguez.
He will start the year in the minors, but if New York endures injuries or prolonged struggles by one of their everyday players, Dominguez might have a runway for some at-bats.
He’s still a very young player, and has yet to see 1,000 career at-bats at the MLB level.
What makes George Kirby an attractive trade candidate is the fact he has three more full seasons of team control before he hits MLB free agency.
