Phillies Linked to Slugger as Yankees Exit the Third Base Market

The Philadelphia Phillies might be swinging for power at the trade deadline—and Eugenio Suárez could be the perfect fit.

According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Phillies are among the teams showing interest in Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez. The 34-year-old slugger is putting together an amazing season, and while teams like the Yankees, Mets, and Mariners were previously linked to Suárez, the market is shifting fast.

With the Yankees handling infield needs elsewhere and the Mets also looking for help, the Phillies are now the most logical landing spot for Suárez. Alec Bohm’s injury makes Philadelphia’s need urgent as they aim to keep pace in the NL East.

Suárez Checks Every Box for the Phillies

The Phillies have built their offense around power bats like Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper, and Suárez would be right at home in that formula. The veteran has launched 36 home runs, driven in an MLB-best 86 RBIs, and posted a .593 slugging percentage through late July—numbers that would immediately add thump to the middle of Philadelphia’s lineup.

He’s not just padding stats, either. Suárez earned his second All-Star selection this year and has hit over 30 home runs in four of the last five seasons. While he brings swing-and-miss risk, he fits the type of boom-or-bust bat the Phillies have leaned into under manager Rob Thomson.

With Bohm sidelined by a fractured rib and uncertain for the stretch run, Suárez offers instant impact. Weston Wilson has filled in admirably, but he’s not the kind of hitter you pencil into a playoff lineup. Suárez, on the other hand, is a proven October bat with years of postseason experience, including with the Reds and Mariners.

Add in the fact that he’s a right-handed hitter in a lefty-heavy lineup, and the fit gets even cleaner.

Why Arizona Might Move Him Now

The Diamondbacks are reportedly planning to trade several veterans at the deadline, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Sitting in fourth place in the NL West and fading fast, Arizona faces a familiar dilemma: do they keep Suárez for a faint Wild Card push, or trade him now and get value before he hits free agency?

Suárez is making $15 million this year and will become a free agent after the season. Letting him walk would net the D-backs little in return, especially as a non-playoff team. Trading him now—at peak value—makes far more sense.

And that’s exactly where the Phillies come in.

By acquiring Suárez, Philadelphia makes a direct, high-impact upgrade while the division race tightens.

The price is likely to be expensive. Arizona may ask for one of the Phillies’ upper-level pitching prospects or a controllable infield bat. But for a team built to win now and thriving on high-variance offense, Philadelphia has taken this kind of swing before—and may need to take it again.

Suárez may not be the flashiest name, but he exactly matches what the Phillies need to reshape the playoff race.
