Former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Genesis Cabrera has found a new home following his release.
Philadelphia released the seven-year MLB veteran from his minor-league deal on May 16. He inked a minor-league deal with the Phillies in December after a rough 2025, but he struggled in the minors.
In Triple-A, Cabrera was 1-2 with a 10.38 ERA in 15 games, including his last outing, where he went 0.1 innings, allowing 8 runs, on 6 hits and 2 walks. That ultimately led to his release. Following his release, it was reported that Cabrera was pondering signing overseas.
However, according to the MLB transactions log, the Kansas City Royals have now signed Cabrera to a minor-league deal. He was then assigned to the Omaha Storm Chasers in Triple-A.
Cabrera originally signed with the Tampa Bay Rays as an international free agent in 2013. He’s pitched in parts of seven MLB seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Mets, Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Minnesota Twins, with the lefty pitching for the final four teams all in 2025.
In his MLB career, Cabrera is 17-15 with a 4.24 ERA in 312 games and will add some pitching depth to the Royals organization.
Phillies Shuffle Lineup
Philadelphia struggled out of the gates this season, which led to the team firing manager Rob Thomson.
Since then, the Phillies have turned their season around, which included a 4-3 win over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday. In the win, interim manager Don Mattingly dropped Trea Turner in the lineup and put Kyle Schwarber in the leadoff spot.
“Mattingly texted me yesterday — me and Kyle — and I was all for it,” Turner said. “It’s, I guess, kind of an honor to hit at the top of the order and you want to be up there. You want to take pride in that, but whether it’s one, two, three, four — whatever it is is fine with me.”
Mattingly, meanwhile, said the decision was made to try to get Turner going.
“I mean, I think we just see, right?” Mattingly said. “Schwarbs has hit first a lot. Trea has hit two, he’s hit one. I really don’t think it’s a big deal, honestly, which one’s which. I’d like to get Trea going, and really hopefully, just give a little different feel to where he’s at.”
Turner is hitting .225 with 6 home runs and 17 RBIs this season.
Philadelphia Gets Positive Injury Update
Along with the Phillies turning their season around, the team got a positive injury update on Brandon Marsh.
Ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Padres, the Phillies revealed some positive injury news, according to Matt Gelb of The Athletic.
“Brandon Marsh (middle finger) is a little sore, Don Mattingly said, but it’s about what they expected. Club believes he can play Friday. (They are off Thursday.),” Gelb wrote on X.
The Phillies will look for the series win against the Padres on Wednesday after winning Tuesday’s game. Philadelphia enters play with a record of 28-27 and is two games back of a Wild Card spot.
