During the MLB offseason, tension arose between the Philadelphia Phillies and superstar first baseman Bryce Harper.
While speaking to the media, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski made a very controversial statement about Harper. He stated that he didn’t think Harper was “elite” anymore.
“I don’t think he’s content with the year that he had. And again, it wasn’t a bad year. But when you think of Bryce Harper, you think of elite, right?” Dombrowski said. “You think of one of the top 10 players in baseball, and I don’t think it fit into that category. But again, a very good player. I’ve seen guys at his age — again, he’s not old — that level off. Or I’ve seen guys rise again.”
Harper was quick to respond to those comments from Dombrowski. It was clear that he wasn’t happy to receive that kind of criticism.
“I don’t get motivated by that kind of stuff,” Harper said. “For me, it was kind of wild the whole situation of that happening. I think the big thing for me was, when we first met with this organization, it was, ‘Hey, you know, we’re always going to keep things in-house, and we expect you to do the same.’ And so, you know, when that didn’t happen, kind of took me for a run a little bit.
Now, the Phillies have been hit with an ominous warning about Harper’s future with the team.
Philadelphia Phillies Facing Dangerous Bryce Harper Situation
Hugh Douglas made an appearance on SportsRadio 94WIP and revealed that he doesn’t think Harper will simply let those comments go.
“Bryce is going to keep it cordial, but he isn’t gonna forget this,” Douglas said.
Dombrowski may very well have done serious damage to the relationship between Philadelphia and Harper. That’s the last thing that he could have afforded to do.
Granted, the 33-year-old star did have a down season in 2025. He played in 132 games and hit 27 home runs tog o along with 75 RBI and a slash line of .261/.357/.487.
That being said, Harper is still going to be an incredibly important piece of helping the Phillies towards a World Series run. Speaking out and causing damage to the relationship is simply not a wise decision.
What to Expect from the Philadelphia Phillies in 2026
At the end of the day, Philadelphia did not have a very aggressive offseason. The Phillies were able to re-sign star slugger Kyle Schwarber and catcher J.T. Realmuto, but they lost starting pitcher Ranger Suarez to the Boston Red Sox.
Outside of the moves to bring back Schwarber and Realmuto, they didn’t make many big moves.
Brad Keller was signed to bolster the bullpen on a two-year, $22 million deal and outfielder Adolis Garcia was brought in on a one-year, $10 million contract. Those additions won’t move the needle too much.
Jim Bowden of The Athletic has projected Philadelphia to finish third in the NL East division race. That would be a tough blow for the Phillies and might see them miss the playoffs.
Only time will tell, but Philadelphia is facing a concerning situation with Harper and expectations have fallen off about what the team’s 2026 season will look like.
