Shortly after the 2025 MLB regular season, the New York Mets’ first baseman, Pete Alonso, decided to opt out of his current deal in search of another long-term deal. He is now eligible to sign with any organization, which puts pressure on the Mets to meet Alonso on his contract demands if they want to retain the five-time All-Star.

It has been reported over the last month that Pete Alonso is seeking a seven-year deal in free agency, but it’s unclear if the Mets want to commit to Alonso for that period of time.

Pete Alonso Prediction has Polar Bear On the Move

In a recent free agent rumors piece by Bleacher Report, writer Erik Beaston predicts that the “Polar Bear”, Pete Alonso, will ‘sign elsewhere’:

“Pete Alonso returned to form in 2025, proving his value to the Mets with a performance that saw him hit 38 home runs, drive in 126 runs, and hit for a .272 average. It was enough to earn the Polar Bear a Silver Slugger Award and create questions about the team’s willingness to let him walk via free agency after he announced that he would opt out of his deal and test the market.”

“Prediction: Alonso leaves New York, signs elsewhere”

In a report by USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, it’s actually the Boston Red Sox that are named as the best fit for Pete Alonso, as they are attempting to add a power bat this offseason.

Alonso is perhaps the best pure hitter in free agency this season. He hit 38 home runs, 41 doubles, and drove in 126 runs in 2025. Alonso has four seasons of 115+ RBIs and five seasons of 35+ home runs.

Mets Offseason Outlook

If, as this report indicates, the New York Mets do not retain Pete Alonso, they will have to replace him in some way. Munetaka Murakami may be an option, but the Mets’ priority should be re-signing Alonso.

Considering the Mets’ big spending habits, they will likely be linked to almost every big free agent. Starting pitching, re-signing Edwin Diaz, and adding another outfield bat are also at the top of the Mets’ wishlist this offseason. Despite several massive offensive seasons, this season was the first time Alonso took home a Silver Slugger award for his offensive efforts. He’s also been named an All-Star in each of the last four seasons.

If everything falls into place and a team meets Alonso on his seven-year contract demand, his contract could be worth up to $200 million this winter.
