On Monday September 29, 2o25, the San Francisco Giants announced they have dismissed manager Bob Melvin.
Melvin managed the Giants for two seasons and had a 161-163 record.
The Giants now begin their search for their third manager in the past four seasons.
Melvin Hinted His Time May Be Up
After the San Francisco Giants’ 2025 season came to a mostly unceremonious end on Sunday September 18, 2025, all focus shifted to Melvin.
After another disappointing, middle of the road season in 2025 that saw the Giants go 81-81 and miss the playoffs, many fans and insiders called for his firing. Expectations for the Giants this season were higher than they’ve been in almost a decade, and the Giants flirted with the playoffs all season long, but ultimately couldn’t sneak in.
The Giants exercised Melvin’s option for the 2026 season back on July 1, 2025, and it seemed like President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey and the rest of the front office were committed to Melvin no matter what. They all but committed to him for another season amidst a rough patch, where the Giants had lost 6 of their past 7 games and 11 of 15.
But Melvin’s comments after the Giants’ final game of the 2025 season, on Sunday September 28, 2025, indicated that his job status has become a lot less certain after San Francisco’s further collapse and tumble out of the playoff race.
When Melvin was asked if he’d been given any assurances he would be brought back as Giants manager next season.
“No,” Melvin simply said. “It is what it is, we’ll see what the next day brings.”
Given Melvin’s day-to-day approach to his own job status, he seemed as uncertain as anybody that he wold make it through the first few days of the offseason and remain as the Giants manager.
Ultimately, it was an indication that he was on his way out.
The Bruce Bochy Rumor – And Why It Doesn’t Make Sense
Longtime MLB insider Bob Nightengale stirred the pot with Giants fans on Sunday September 28, 2025 when he listed Bruce Bochy as the top option to replace Melvin as manager of the Giants.
Signing Bochy, who won three World Series titles from 2010-14 with the Giants with famously excellent in-game management, would certainly be the splashiest move. And given that he led the Texas Rangers to a World Series championship in 2023, he also may be the best move in the short term.
But there are two major issues.
One, does Bochy even want to come back? Remember, he “retired” from baseball after the 2019 season with the Giants, and many people speculated that was less because he actually wanted to retire and more because he did not like working with new Giants President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi.
Bochy almost certainly has a better relationship with Posey than Zaidi, but the split could have still left a bad taste in his mouth, or he could believe that he’s already accomplished everything that he set out to with the Giants.
The second issue is Bochy’s age. In the first month of the 2026 MLB season, Bochy is going to turn 71 years old.
Only 5 MLB managers in history have managed a game at 72 years old or older. Unless the Giants want to go the Connie Mack route and have Bochy manage until he’s 87, he probably doesn’t have more than a few years in a Giants uniform ahead of him.
And remember, he already retired once. If he could manage at 75 or older, would he even want to?
Another Intriguing Option For The Giants At Manager
Longtime San Francisco Giants insider listed an interesting option for the Giants at manager: Nick Hundley.
Hundley played for the Giants from 2017-2018 and won the Willie Mac award with San Francisco in 2017. After retiring from baseball in 2020, he immediately jumped into working in the front office. He is currently a special assistant to the general manager for the Texas Rangers.
A career backup catcher who has a relationship with Buster Posey? The Giants could have the next Bruce Bochy on their hands…and Hundley is only 42 years old!
With how much success another former Giants backup catcher, Stephen Vogt, is having with the Cleveland Guardians, Hundley may be worth a try.
But what do you think Giants fans? Should the Giants’ manager in 2025 be Bruce Bochy, Nick Hundley, or someone else entirely?
