Buster Posey and the San Francisco Giants have been linked to quite a few different rumors throughout the course of the MLB offseason. However, they have yet to make any big swing moves.
Recently, the Giants were able to agree to terms on a two-year contract with free agent outfielder Harrison Bader. That pickup was important for the team’s lineup and position defense.
That being said, there is another big need remaining that San Francisco should focus on.
Before the start of the 2026 MLB season, the Giants could use more starting pitching. They were heavily connected to the rumors surrounding star pitcher Freddy Peralta before the Milwaukee Brewers traded him to the New York Mets. Now, they’ll need to shift their attention to other targets.
One potential trade target has been suggested by an MLB insider for San Francisco.
San Francisco Giants Connected to Potential $56 Million Trade Target
Jim Bowden of The Athletic took a look at the top players who could be traded before Opening Day. When it came to Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara, he named the Giants as a team to watch.
In addition to San Francisco, Bowden also suggested that the Baltimore Orioles or San Diego Padres could be threats to acquire Alcantara as well.
“If he has a dominant spring training and looks closer to his 2022 self, then I believe he will be moved by Opening Day,” Bowden wrote. “He’s a potential game-changer for teams such as the Orioles, Padres and Giants if either acquires him.”
Alcantara would be a perfect pickup for the Giants. Depending on the price tag, he should be at the very top of their wish list.
That price tag could get driven up by other teams pursuing a deal with the Marlins. There aren’t many elite starters available on the market.
What Would the Giants Be Getting in Sandy Alcantara?
When Alcantara is healthy, he has top-tier starter material. He has shown flashes of being the kind of player who can anchor a rotation, but the consistency hasn’t been there.
Last season with Miami, the 30-year-old pitcher made 31 starts. He compiled an 11-12 record to go along with a 5.36 ERA, a 1.27 WHIP, a 2.5 K/BB ratio, and 174.2 innings pitched. Obviously, those numbers don’t look great.
Back in 2022, however, Alcantara made 32 starts and went 14-9 with a 2.28 ERA, a 0.98 WHIP, a 4.1 K/BB ratio, and 228.2 innings of work completed.
That comparison shows what Alcantara is capable of being. He simply needs to be healthy and in the right situation.
Making a trade for him would be a bit of a risk for San Francisco. There is no guarantee that he’ll stay healthy or that he’ll be able to pitch like he did in 2022 again. Despite the risk, the Giants should take a gamble and pursuing a trade with the Marlins.
If he can turn back the clock a couple of years in 2026, Alcantara could be the piece that powers San Francisco back into postseason contention.
