The San Francisco Giants may sit 7 games out of a playoff spot with only 29 games to go, but when asked if the Giants still think they can make the postseason in 2025, star third baseman Matt Chapman’s response was simple.
“Nothing’s impossible,” Chapman said. “But I think we just are focused on tomorrow.”
Chapman added that paying too much attention to the standings hurt the Giants earlier in the season, which is why they are focused on taking it a game at a time.
Chapman Led The Giants To A Big Win
Even though it’s a long shot, questions about if the Giants can make the playoffs have arisen again because they are playing their best stretch of baseball in a long time.
The Giants have won four games in a row against two of the best teams in baseball, the Milwaukee Brewers and the Chicago Cubs.
And their latest win was a total beatdown, a 12-3 demolition of the Cubs. Matt Chapman’s bat played a big factor in the win, as he went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
He also was part of the most viral play of the night by happenstance, when Cubs right fielder Kyle Tucker threw a ball that bounced off Chapman’s helmet allowing Dominic Smith to come in and score for the Giants.
The biggest offensive star of the night, however, was Rafael Devers, who had easily his best game yet in a Giants uniform. Devers went 4-for-4, crushed two homers, drove in 5 runs and scored 4 runs. He even drew a walk for good measure.
The Giants are going for their fifth straight win on Thursday August 28, 2025 when they take on the Cubs in their series finale. Ace Logan Webb gets the start for the Giants as they try to sweep Chicago.
Buster Posey Also Says The Giants Could Make The Playoffs
Matt Chapman is not the only person who has a little bit of belief left that the Giants could make the playoffs. San Francisco Giants President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey went on KNBR on Thursday August 28, 2025 and echoed Chapman’s sentiments.
“The feeling is you’re going to fight tooth and nail to the end,” Posey told hosts Murph and Markus. “We’re up against it but it’s not out of the realm of possibility. I think everyone feels that.”
The Giants don’t have a very difficult remaining schedule. They play the league-worst Colorado Rockies 6 times, and they have 15 other games against teams with worse records than them.
The only tough part of their schedule, besides their one remaining game against the Cubs, is the seven remaining games they have against the Los Angeles Dodgers, with four of those coming in Los Angeles.
But a playoff run is not entirely within their control. They’d need both the New York Mets and Cincinnati Reds to have a tough month of October. The Giants can’t contribute to that possibility at all; they don’t play either the Mets or Reds before the season ends.
The Mets are on a bit of a hot streak, having won 4 in a row and 7 of their last 10 games. The Reds have had a tougher stretch recently, having lost three in a row and 6 of their last 10 games.
Giants fans, do you still believe a playoff run is possible? What record do you think the Giants need to have to earn the third wild card spot?
